Job summary

The Outpatient Department of The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital has undergone a major transformation programme to improve the patient experience for our patients. As part of this, we have created a full time position for a band 5 adult nurse. We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic registered adult nurse with a minimum of 12 months post registration experience to join our team. As part of our professional, friendly and compassionate team you will do everything you can to ensure the patient's treatment is of the highest standard.

We are looking for someone to work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that our patients feel safe and welcomed into the department. As well as undertaking basic duties you will function as a clinical practitioner being responsible for the delivery of patient care, managing and organising a work load on a daily basis.

In addition you will be required to supervise junior staff and mentor nursing students.

We encourage sharing of best practice across our site to develop your skills and take advantage of our excellent clinical leadership knowledge.

The successful candidate will be joining a motivated team who's focused on providing a high standard of service to patients in a busy outpatient department.

Candidates must be flexible, adaptable and able to work both in a team and independently.

The working hours of the department are Monday - Friday with a variety of shifts between 8am and 7pm

Main duties of the job

Candidate will be responsible for the setting up and running of clinics in the outpatient department. The candidate will be assisting clinicians within the department, including chaperoning, Pre-assessment and complex wound dressings.

Candidate must have good communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.

Candidate must have good initiative.

We are looking for someone who is friendly and welcoming to ensure that patients feel safe when coming into the department.

Phlebotomy is desirable but not essential as training will be given.

All staff are required to demonstrate a level of IT literacy skills appropriate to their job, as the use of IT is fundamental in delivering good quality efficient health care

About us

Our team in Stanmore Outpatients consists of 15 band 3 clinic support workers, 7 qualified band 5 nurses, 3 band 6 nurses and 1 band 7 outpatient manager.

The department is interesting and varied, including managing a range of specialist orthopaedic clinics, assisting with the pre-operative screening and running a complex dressing clinic. In total the outpatients department has 24 consulting rooms, 5 of which are based in the Childrens and Young persons Outpatient department.

We have a separate adult outpatients and Paediatric outpatients and our staff rotate between the two.

We are a close team who work hard to support each other and help each other to develop and grow. We are open to new ideas and ways of working that can improve the experience for patients and staff.

The management team are supportive with training and staff wanting to develop themselves within their career pathways.

All staff are expected to follow the Trusts Val-Yous, especially in regards to their conduct, teamwork and patient care

Job responsibilities

To provide the highest standard of individualized care to all patients in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team, acting as an advocate for the care and support for all patients throughout the outpatient department.

To ensure the outpatient environment is welcoming to all patients, visitors and staff using the facilities.

To work closely with clinicians within the department across a range of specialist orthopaedic conditions.

Educate patients and their families or carers, assessing their care needs and liaising with other departments within the Trust to facilitate the patients individual treatment pathway

To carry out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision to the highest evidence based standard.

To act as the departments team leader on a rotational basis supervising Clinic Support Workers, Student Nurses & newly qualified Staffnurses.

Work closely with the Safeguarding teams and highlight concerns in a timely manner.
