A6 South is a 19 bedded surgical area caring for a range of emergency surgery patients with a specialist interest in Colorectal, Upper GI and Liver surgery. Our ward offers excellent experience in nursing this complex group of patients. Alongside caring for our emergency patients, we also support patients living with intestinal failure. You will follow the journey of patients from investigation stage of their disease through to theatre, and will develop a vast range of transferable surgical skills including caring for patients who require Total Parenteral Nutrition and Enteral Feeding. Many of our patients are acutely unwell and we also receive patients who have been transferred out of critical care, so there is an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and expertise in caring for these patients. You will gain experience of working closely with various members of the multidisciplinary team including specialist nurses such as stoma and tissue viability. A6 South was one of the first wards in the UHB to undertake the ERAS (enhanced recovery) programme and we advocate this model of care with our patients.
