Job summary

The Public Health Team at SwindonBorough Council is seeking to recruit two experienced and motivated PublicHealth Principals to provide expertise, innovation and public health leadershipacross Swindon.

Our vision is to tackle inequalities andempower all people in Swindon to live longer, healthier, fulfilling lives, supportedby thriving and connected communities. Our highly successful public health teamworks to improve and protect the health of Swindon residents, tackle healthinequalities and protect the most vulnerable.

Both roles will be expected to workacross the domains of public health, and be prepared to step up to tackleemerging issues and opportunities. In the first instance the successful postholders will lead on the following portfolio areas:

Health Protectionand Sexual Health

Healthimprovement and Health Inequalities

Main duties of the job

The Public Health team are expected todeliver across the four domains of public health:

Healthintelligence, using data and evidence to inform all we do;

HealthProtection identifying, preventing and mitigating the impacts of infectiousdiseases and of environmental, chemical and radiological threats; HealthImprovement helping people to improve and maintain their health by developing,implementing and evaluating strategies and interventions; Healthcarepublic health services using evidence to support service development and toensure the quality of services by assisting in the commissioning of services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for leading the strategic directionacross areas of designated responsibility and will provide an advancedspecialist public health approach with minimal supervision to reflect bothnational and local priorities with the emphasis on prevention and reducinghealth inequalities. The public health principal may be expected to be able to workacross any topic area covered under the domains of public health. The publichealth principal may have a professional area of interest in regard to thepublic health agenda, however may be expected to be able to work across thelife course and cover agenda areas including: sexual health, maternal and childhealth improvement, adult health improvement, obesity and weight management,smoking cessation and tobacco control, substance misuse, mental health, publichealth campaign work, screening and immunisation uptake, providing the beststart in life and supporting the healthy aging agenda.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

A postgraduate degree or professional qualification in public health Masters in Public Health, Masters in Health Economics), or committed to achieving such qualification within four years of commencing post.
