Job summary

Locum Consultant General Paediatrician with interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology (9PA) for maternity leave cover

The Whittington is a major provider of secondary care to the local boroughs of Islington and West Haringey, and is one of the three main teaching campuses of the Royal Free and University College Medical School.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a new General Paediatric Consultant to join our team. There is no neonatal component. Supporting professional activities may include teaching. This is 1 year fixed term post for maternity leave cover commencing December 2024.

Ideally applicants should have training and experience in diabetes and endocrinology. Strong applications without this may be considered as we may be able to make alternative arrangements for the diabetes and endocrine cover through negotiation of departmental job plans.

Job responsibilities

The timetable comprises 9 programmed Activities (PAs).

Job plans are annualized. The timetable below is thus only a framework. The actual number of clinics per week can be variable. The total number per year is calculated as part of the job planning process once acute PAs and SPA time is accounted for. Job planning is a transparent process and done as a department. The days of the week the appointee will work may be negotiated depending on their needs and those of the department.

SPA includes Educational Supervision and overseeing of SHO rota and postgraduate teaching programme.

Attending Weeks

There is no neonatal commitment.

The weekend and weekday on-call commitment will be a 1 in 11 for general paediatrics. The post holder will be expected to be on site until 9pm on a weekday on-call with the remainder of the on-call being non-resident with attendance as required for emergencies. The weekends are split, with one consultant on site between 9am -5pm and a second consultant on site between and 9pm and then on call from home from 9pm until 9am the following morning.

The post holder will be attending 1 in 11 weeks and undertake outpatient and supporting professional activities in the non-attending weeks.

The attending consultant hasthe following commitments during the attending week:

Responsibility for all admissions to Ifor ward Responsibility for leading all daily morning handovers Responsibility for conducting or supervising middle grades in conducting daily ward rounds, on-going management of all children and young people on Ifor ward, bedside teaching of all trainees in general paediatrics and for communicating with parents of children on Ifor ward Responsibility for all acute admissions to the paediatric ambulatory care unit.

Note: All clinics are cancelled during attending weeks.

Essential

Full GMC Registration On GMC specialist register OR withi 6 months of CCT at time of scheduled interview CESR applicants must be on specialist register at point of application MRCPCH or equivalent SPIN or equivalent in diabetes

Desirable

Higher degree eg Msc, MD, PhD in Paediatrics

Knowledge and skills

Essential

Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions Good communication skills Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively Meets the requirements of the GMC's 'Good Medical Practice

Desirable

oKnowledge of risk management, annual job planning, appraisal review process, etc.

Clinical Experience

Essential

Valid APLS Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Experience in diabetes and endocrinology Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training

Experience working in NHS Wider experience, research, and training, in providing a subspecialty service

Academic

Essential

Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, so as to improve clinical outcomes Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
