Job summary

The Fellowship will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, which is one of the busiest units in the UK. Typically, there is an annual turnover of over 900 day-cases, 1,500 elective cases and 1,700 emergencies. Outpatient activity typically includes over 5,000 new and 9,000 follow-up patients per year. There are 16 neurosurgical trainees and an in-house fellowship in spinal surgery. However, there are no formal fellowships in cranial neurosurgery.

The neurosurgical oncology service provides 300-400 diagnostic procedures annually. A well-established MDT includes neuro-oncology, neurology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, specialist nurses, speech & language therapists, occupational & physiotherapists, and neuropsychologists. A dedicated neurosurgical oncology clinic has been established as point-of-entry for patients with a wide range of tumour types into specialist care pathways supported by specialist consultant neurosurgeons. Dedicated operating lists are available 3 days per week with additional ad hoc lists as required. Recent investment by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has established state-of-the-art operative facilities with integrated neuro-navigation, advanced intra-operative monitoring coupled with intra-operative ultrasound, fluorescence-guided surgery and 3D microscopy.

Main duties of the job

By the end of the fellowship the trainee will be able to demonstrate:

*Theoretical and practical knowledge related to neurosurgical oncology

*Appropriate technical and operative skills

*Clinical skills and judgement

*Generic professional and leadership skills

*An understanding of the values and responsibilities that underpin neurosurgical oncology

*The specific attributes needed to be a neurosurgical oncologist

*A commitment to their on-going personal and professional development and practice using reflective practice and other educational processes

*An understanding and respect for the multi-professional nature of the care of patients with brain cancer and their role in it

*An understanding of the responsibilities of being an employee in the UK NHS

Job responsibilities

The Department of Neurosurgery is located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham utilising facilities within the New QEHB Building and the Short Stay Unit (SSU) within the Heritage Building.

*36 beds on ward 407, 36 beds on ward 409 and 8 beds on ward 411

*Access to the equivalent of 35 bed stays per week on (SSU)

*Three elective and on emergency dedicated neurosurgical operating theatres

*Access to 4 beds on the ambulatory care unit

*Access to neurosurgical beds in the hospital's Critical Care Unit

*Full imaging services, including 6 MRI scanning units.

*Full out-patient facilities with electronic patient records

*Full post-graduate training facilities

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

*Obtained CCT in neurosurgery or be within 6 months of doing so. *FRCS (surgical neurology) *Full GMC registration with a licence to practice (or application process in progress) *Must be in possession of the appropriate professional qualification, FRCS(SN) or equivalent

Experience

Essential

*Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent). *A minimum of 3 years at ST level in a substantive post within the UK or equivalent service *Competent in all aspects of emergency neurosurgery *Evidence of interest in surgical neuro-oncology *Training in diagnosis and treatment of Neurosurgical conditions including emergency presentations.
