About the Role:

As a Teaching Assistant focusing on Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) support, you’ll play a key role in helping students overcome barriers to learning caused by anxiety, depression, and other emotional difficulties. Many of the students you will work with are disengaged from education, and your role will be pivotal in motivating them, restoring their confidence, and guiding them towards a more positive relationship with school and learning.

What You’ll Do:
  • Reignite Student Engagement: Work 1:1 and in small groups with students who are struggling to engage in class, helping them find new ways to connect with their learning.
  • Emotional Support: Help students manage their emotions, teaching them practical coping strategies and resilience skills that they can apply both in and outside of school.
  • Build Confidence: Support students to develop their self-esteem and social skills, empowering them to participate more fully in school life and achieve their potential.
  • Collaborate and Innovate: Work closely with teachers, the SEN/SEMH team, and external professionals to implement tailored support plans and interventions that help students stay on track.
  • Create a Safe Space: Foster a calm and nurturing environment where students feel safe to express themselves, ask for help, and work through their emotional and academic challenges.
  • Track Progress: Regularly assess student wellbeing and progress, adapting your support to ensure each student is getting the best chance to succeed.
What’s in It for You?
  • Transform Lives: Make a genuine difference to students who are at risk of falling behind or becoming completely disengaged from education.
  • Supportive Environment: Join a school that’s fully equipped with specialised resources and a team committed to SEMH support.
  • Ongoing Development: Access regular training in mental health support and behaviour management strategies to enhance your skills.
Who We’re Looking For:
  • Experience with SEMH: Ideally, you’ll have worked with young people dealing with mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, or behavioural challenges but this is not essential.
  • Empathy and Patience: You’ll need a compassionate, flexible approach with the ability to inspire and motivate students who may feel disconnected from their learning.
  • Strong Team Player: Collaboration with teachers, mental health professionals, and families will be key to ensuring the right support for every student.
  • Relevant Qualifications: While qualifications like Level 2/3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning or Mental Health First Aid are a bonus, what matters most is your experience and attitude.
