Job summary

Applications are invited for Head of Dialysis Technical Services within South East Wales.

This is an opportunity to lead a small team of specalised enginneers who are an integral part of the patient journey supporting the maintenance and repair of complex renal equipment. The succesful candidate will be a senior manager within the Nephrology and Transplant directorate support the delivery and developmemt of key priorities including Home Therapies expansion.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the leadership, motivation, overall functioning and organisation of the specialised Dialysis Technical Service within Nephology & Transplant directorate. The postholder will be expected to keep within budget and operational constraints. .

They will take the lead and have the ability and experience to handle any of the complex as well as day to day technical problems, giving advice relevant to medical equipment.

The post holder will be expected to deal directly with patients, communicating complex equipment related issues to relevant stakeholders eg: Clinical colleagues, patients and carers. They will have the skill, knowledge, ability and breadth of experience to be able to deal with the complex and unexpected situations that arise.

The post holder will contribute to the overall direction of the directorate contributing individual skills and specialist knowledge as appropriate, assisting the Directorate Manager and wider management team in the overall strategic direction of Nephrology & Transplant. Liaison with customers and suppliers both within NHS Wales and externally will be a priority.

Qualifications

Essential

Appropriate Master's Degree or equivalent & Registration with RCT or HCPC

Desirable

Able to meet the requirements for membership at Corporate Engineer level or equivalent professional membership of a relevant professional body

Experience

Essential

Experience in applying medical device maintenance and risk management principles & In depth knowledge of the regulatory framework around medical devices & Specialist knowledge and understanding of a wide range of medical equipment.

Skills

Essential

Expert skills in the use of computer database and management systems. & Able to use Excel, Word etc to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information & Able to generate equipment related reports to meet the needs of the customer & Able to plan own work, liaise with users, suppliers etc. & Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within or relating to own specialist area of competence & Able to take responsibility for the standard of work of the Team & Able to allocate and review the work of the team & Able to set and review standards of work & Able to plan strategically, ensuring continuous improvement & Able to analyse complex technical problems, interpret and make appropriate decisions & Able to communicate complex information across professional boundaries ( fault finding in an emergency call out, to minimise misunderstanding and obtain the required information) & Able to negotiate with customers including those in specialist clinical areas & Able to represent the department at meetings for major development projects.

Desirable

Highly developed craft skills enabling the use of appropriate tools and measuring equipment. Skills in handling small components in complex equipment.

Special Knowledge

Essential

Advanced knowledge of electronic workshop practice and computer systems & Advanced knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, principles & Able to advise on the suitability of new equipment & Able to undertake the investigation of adverse equipment related incidents and provide written reports. & Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines ISO 9001 2015, BSI standards, MDA/MHRA guidance, Health and Safety, COSHH. & High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure & Knowledge of specialist safety issues as they apply to medical equipment such as electrical, mechanical and contamination hazards & Able to undertake specialist training on the maintenance and repair of a range of medical devices.
