Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our busy pharmacy team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham under the speciality of Gastroenterology. We have a range of complex patients and often have tertiary referrals from other hospitals making the case interesting and diverse.

This is a part-time post based in pharmacy and the gastroenterology ward. You would have the support of an IBD Specialist pharmacist and Advanced pharmacist in intestinal failure.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist input and demonstrate expert knowledge in Gastroenterology in accordance with the priorities set by the Chief Pharmacist and the Trust agreed standards. Working within the trust formulary, using evidence-based medicine, across UHB sites.

*Ensure the clinical services provided are of a high standard and that all prescribed medication is clinically screened in a timely manner. Provide daily clinical pharmacy services to Gastroenterology wards.

*Develop the clinical pharmacy service and lead other Pharmacists and Technicians in Gastroenterology to a high standard of pharmaceutical care.

*Provide highly specialist advice to and counsel patients and/or their relatives (who may sometimes be distressed and have language difficulties or other disabilities) on their prescribed medication to promote compliance.

*Monitor and report discrepancies found in the computerised prescribing system (PICS), liaising with the Lead Pharmacist- Electronic Prescribing.

*Develop a whole systems approach within the specialty and develop integrated care pathways to provide information to patients on obtaining supplies of specialised medications after discharge from hospital.

*Participate in the rota for provision of pharmacy services covering dispensary, on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. Providing advisory support to the on-call service as per rota.

Qualifications

Essential

* MPharm degree or equivalent * Clinical diploma (or equivalent) or higher Pharmacy degree * Qualified as an independent non-medical prescribed or a willingness to undertake the programme. * GPhC registration

Desirable

* Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Experience

Essential

* Substantial experience as a band 7 pharmacist (or above) within hospital pharmacy. * Experience in a range of clinical specialties. * Previous participation in multi-disciplinary team * Experience in supervising and managing pharmacists & pharmacy technicians and performing appraisals. * Experience of audit work * Excellent knowledge of general clinical pharmacy and drug use * Networking: being able to work within and without the Trust with credibility * Knowledge of current national standards, guidelines in gastroenterology issues relevant to education & training * In-depth knowledge of Continuing Professional Development process and of Plan & Record system * Experience of supervision, developing and appraising staff as well as giving feedback

Desirable

* Experience of tutoring pharmacists studying for postgraduate qualification * Previous experience of teaching other healthcare professionals * Experience of short listing and interviewing * Experience of managing drug expenditure for a specialty and understanding of budgetary mechanism * Experience in service development * Experience of working at a strategic level with senior clinicians and managers and experience of working in an integrated directorate * Experience as a trainer
