Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, innovative and enthusiastic nurse to join our colorectal nursing team. The post holder will play a pivotal role in the functioning of the Colorectal Nursing Service and be a key member of the team working to deliver a high quality patient experience.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to provide holistic care and support to patients and their families affected by colorectal cancer/benign disease and stoma formation. You will provide specialist nursing advice and facilitate care throughout the patient pathway while acting as the patients advocate.
The Colorectal nursing team are a small well established team who provide an autonomous colorectal nursing service both within an inpatient and outpatient setting. This includes a number of nurse led initiatives including practical stoma care teaching, nurse led outpatient clinics, a designated telephone support line by using advanced clinical judgement and expert knowledge of the specialty.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and experienced, who enjoys both patient contact and working as part of the MDT. They will be expected to participate in decision making, education of patients and staff, research and service development. Due to the nature of the role we are looking for a dependable and highly adaptable individual who is able to work independently and has the ability to fit in quickly as part of a team.

Experience
Essential
Extensive recent relevant experience of working with colorectal patients within a relevant clinical speciality. Some experience in developing specialised programs of care relevant to the speciality service.
Desirable
Significant post registration experience at a Band above. Experience of participating in nurse led clinics. Varied clinical background.
Skills
Essential
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a willingness to undertake advanced communication skills training. Ability to work in complex and sometimes distressing situations. Excellent time management and organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and delegate. Analytical approach to problem solving and able to make clinical judgements. Proven skills in teaching individuals and small groups. Motivate and influence others, overcoming barriers often in a contentious situation. Research and audit skills. Good leadership skills Computer literate - ability to use Word/PowerPoint etc.
Desirable
Advanced skills to competently assess/investigate/support and manage patients with colorectal conditions. Clinical examination and assessment skills Ability to work autonomously/ manage a patient case load as part of the multidisciplinary team. Budget awareness.
Knowledge
Essential
Understanding of NMC code of professional conduct/standards of clinical practice. Comprehensive knowledge of the NHS national targets and priorities.
Desirable
Knowledge and understanding of relevant National Guidance both general and speciality specific Cancer Standards, NICE, National Service Frameworks etc. In depth Knowledge and understanding of the needs of colorectal/stoma patients and current issues relevant to the patient group. Evidence of facilitation and management of change. Nurse prescribing or willingness to undertake. Imaging Non-Medical Referrers Training programme or willingness to undertake.
