A post is available in the Histopathology Department, which forms part of the Cellular Pathology directorate. Histopathology receives and processes patient (tissue) samples to provide diagnostic reports to hospital clinicians and General Practitioners. This post presents an opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy, modern hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 60 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services. The service is also has Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection roles and is also developing Biomedical Scientist reporting roles. The service has a specimen tracking system and is developing digital pathology reporting.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities.

Main duties of the job

The Post holder will play a key role in the following areas:

Work as a BMS in all specialist areas of the lab, including, the dissection/reception, section cutting/embedding, special staining, and immunocytochemistry/molecular services.

Carry our frozen sections and Mohs frozen sections.

Support band 7 staff, including staff/workload supervision, staff training and quality control.

Help support staff training and quality control/improvement.

On-call cover on rotation for state-registered BMS staff.

Job responsibilities

Be able to manage the day-to-day running of the specialist area and take responsibility for their own workarea, prioritising own workload and incorporating the training needs of other staff. This will include rearranging staff at short notice when necessary. Be responsible for arranging the workload of the specialist area, including prioritising the urgency of referrals. To develop and maintain effective communications and good working relations with all directorates, internal and external researchers, external academic research partners, and other relevant stakeholders. Preparation of patient pathways for research, communicating to ensure all protocol time points are met for research patients, recognising onward impact of trial treatments and breech of protocols if delays take place. To liaise with specialist area leads, and Divisional Research Lead to manage capacity and demand for research, offering explanations and ensuring all avenues have been exhausted before declining a research study. To liaise directly with the R&D facilitators to ensure all approvals are received in a timely fashion in accordance with the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Time to Target time frames for all research applications. Qualifications

Essential

BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent. Registration portfolio from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) or equivalent Hold registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or working towards for trainee role. Be a member of the IBMS.

Has a working knowledge of the techniques performed within their service.

Essential

Evidence of good hand/eye coordination. Clinical knowledge must be up to date and must be underpinned by evidenced theoretical and practical experience. Ability to Will be able to effectively work within a complex multidisciplinary team.
