Job title: Specimen Reception Lead

Responsible to: Histology Services Manager

Accountable to: Head of Operations

The role: You will be responsible for organising, managing the daily operation of the Specimen Reception team, ensuring the effective day-to-day operation of the department and making sure service levels are met.

Provide strategic vision for any updates or changes to the working environment, process and staffing in line with expansion and/or changes in client needs.

To maintain the highest professional and technical standards in the department. To perform the work to which you are assigned, ensuring that it meets all standards as required by accreditation bodies. To adhere closely to SOPs and to assist in putting these methods into practice and adhering to associated quality assurance procedures.

To participate in department shifts – including early and late cover and weekends as required

Other Responsibilities

•To undertake work as you are assigned in compliance with current UKAS accreditation

•To be familiar with the laboratory computer systems

•To work within and supervise the process of sample receipt, booking and scanning of forms

•To troubleshoot queries from clients and from requests to ensure correct samples/test are requested

•To operate, maintain and troubleshoot various pieces of laboratory equipment within the department, and to ensure all items are correctly functioning and quality controlled at all times

•To manage staff rotas and ensure staff are deployed efficiently and effectively

•To assist in the selection, recruitment, and induction of staff

•To ensure that the specimen reception team is technically trained to agreed standards

• To regularly review the performance of staff and conduct annual reviews

Essential Criteria

•Previous experience of working in a diagnostic laboratory

•Experience of working in a busy environment

•Previous supervisory experience

Skills & Knowledge

•Ability to communicate within the team to deliver effective service

•Ability to work as a member of a team

•Well developed interpersonal and organisational skills

•Computer literate

•Good verbal and written communication skills in English

•Flexible and adaptable approach to work

•Ability to train and assess competence of MLA staff
