Job Title: Behaviour Support Assistant (Primary School)

Reports To: Behaviour Support Coordinator / SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) / Headteacher

Position Summary:

The Behaviour Support Assistant (BSA) in a primary school setting is responsible for supporting students who exhibit challenging behaviours, helping them engage positively with their education. The role involves working closely with teachers, support staff, and parents to implement behaviour management strategies, provide one-on-one or small group support, and foster a safe, inclusive, and productive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Support:

    • Provide direct support to students with behavioural challenges, helping them stay on task and manage their emotions.
    • Implement individualized behaviour management plans (BMPs) under the guidance of the Behaviour Support Coordinator or SENCO.
    • Work with students individually or in small groups to develop social skills, self-regulation strategies, and positive behaviours.
    • Assist students in resolving conflicts and developing positive peer relationships.
  • Classroom Assistance:

    • Support teachers in managing classroom behaviour, including intervening when necessary to de-escalate situations.
    • Monitor and track student behaviour, recording incidents and progress according to school policies.
    • Assist in the preparation of materials and activities that promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning.
    • Work with classroom teachers to adapt lesson plans and teaching methods to better suit the needs of students with behavioural challenges.
  • Collaboration and Communication:

    • Collaborate with teachers, SENCO, and other staff members to develop and implement strategies for managing challenging behaviours.
    • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to provide updates on student behaviour and progress.
    • Participate in meetings with teachers, parents, and external professionals (e.g., educational psychologists) to discuss student progress and adjust support plans as needed.
    • Work with other support staff to maintain a consistent approach to behaviour management across the school.
  • Positive School Environment:

    • Promote a positive, inclusive school culture that encourages respect, responsibility, and kindness among all students.
    • Lead or support initiatives aimed at improving student behaviour, such as reward systems, social skills groups, or school-wide behaviour programs.
    • Support students during transitions, such as moving between activities, classrooms, or school settings, to ensure continuity of positive behaviour.
    • Contribute to creating a safe and welcoming environment in the playground, lunchroom, and other common areas.
  • Professional Development:

    • Attend training sessions, workshops, and staff meetings to enhance knowledge and skills in behaviour management.
    • Stay informed about best practices in behaviour support, special educational needs, and inclusive education.
    • Reflect on and share experiences with colleagues to contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; additional qualifications or certifications in education, child development, or behaviour management are preferred.
    • Training or experience in special educational needs (SEN), mental health, or child psychology is advantageous.
  • Skills and Abilities:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
    • Patience, empathy, and a calm demeanor when working with students exhibiting challenging behaviours.
    • Ability to remain composed and make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
    • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to track progress, maintain records, and manage time effectively.
    • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to the needs of students and the school environment.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
