Job summary

We are launching an exciting oncology Band 5 nursing programme from September with multiple positions available. If you are a committed, proactive, compassionate registered nurse or newly qualified nurse with an interest in oncology then we want you to join our 18 month rotational programme. In this role you will undertake three different placements gaining possible exposure to a mixture of Inpatient & outpatient areas consisting of acute, haematology, medical and research speciality areas. Each placement will be for 6 months. You will work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality care for provide training and support for staff in where specific needs been identified. In the Christie we are committed to assisting in your lifelong learning a newly qualified nurses will be signed up for our preceptorship programme to help support your new role here at the Christie. You will be assigned a dedicated preceptor who will assist you in finding your feet in this new role and support you closely throughout your first a qualified nurse you will be given a substantial supernumerary period and remain supported by senior team members to ensure your transition into the Christie is successful rotation nurses will have an allocated rotation nurse buddy - these buddies are registered nurses who are now in senior positions within the trust after completing the rotation programme.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be gaining exposure into different areas across the trust. Assisting in the care of the patients who pass through the ward areas at The Christie.

You will work alongside our multidisciplinary team to provide high quality holistic care to patients both in and out of hospital.

You will be expected to be able to work alongside support more junior members of staff caring for patients.

You will need to be confident in carrying out procedures such as venepuncture and ECG's and will need to be able to support more junior members of staff in this capacity

You will need to be able to accurately record in patients notes including but not limited to clinical observations.

You will be expected to assist in the maintenance of a clean and hygienic work environment.

You will be expected to provide urgent care in the case of emergencies within the ward area and administer lifesaving treatment where appropriate

At The Christie we have a large specialist Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) which consists of The Supportive Care Team, physiotherapists, dieticians/nutritional nurse specialists, clinical nurse specialists etc who all strive to provide Gold Standard care to our patients, it will be within the role of the staff nurse to independently liaise with these key MDT members to maintain excellent care provision

Job responsibilities

We are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced, self-motivated nurse, with excellent time management skills and well developed interpersonal and communication skills. A vested interest in Haematology and TYA Oncology is essential. In order to grow this interest and the skills of the nurse within this role, we will invest in their development with a period of supernumerary practice, a comprehensive inhouse training package, support from the CPF team and ongoing peer support and coaching from a preceptor/allocated team member. There will also be opportunity for further education and training as your career progresses.

We work in small teams which cover a cohort of patients, to provide 24-hour care to give therapy, provide symptom control, treat sepsis and maintain an overall holistic approach for the individuals we care for.

We are looking for a motivated fully qualified and experienced adult or childrens nurse to work in our fast paced but patient focused environment. You must want to develop new skills and knowledge around specialised cancer treatments. You will be caring, interested in haematology-oncology and the ever-advancing innovations in treatment and care.

PROFESSIONAL :

As part of the ward team help achieve and maintain a high standard of patient care.

To be aware of the patients needs, both physical and psychological whilst ensuring privacy & dignity is maintained.

To welcome patients and introduce them to the ward routine and ensure they receive the most age appropriate welcome booklett.

To be aware of the needs of relatives, and to give them support, advice and direct themn to most appropriate supporting agencies.

To give and receive the report at change over of duties and ensure handover sheet is updated at each shift.

To participate in the rehabilitation of patients and give relatives any necessary instructions and support.

Ensure that prescribed drugs and treatments are stored and administered correctly and in accordance with the Hospital Procedure and Policy.

Correct care and custody of controlled drugs is observed at all times.

To follow the correct procedure when notifying relatives of seriously ill patients and those who have died.

To liaise with medical and para-medical personnel and community organisations to ensure timely and safe discharges.

To participate in internal rotation to night duty as required.

EDUCATION :

Participate in the theoretical and practical professional instruction of all learners and untrained staff.

To monitor the progress of learners and, in particular, their skills in carrying out practical procedures.

Attend all manadatory training and update all e- Learning in accordance with Trust requirements

Participate in all unit training for JACIE accreditation and TYA/Paediatric requirements including Paediatric life support and level 2B safe guarding

Complete the ward introductory and other training packages assisted by the Ward practice facilitators

PERSONNEL :

Help and create a good working atmosphere by promoting the ward Aims and objectives.

Welcome and introduce new staff to the patients and the nursing team.

Advise and support new nurses as appropriate and utilise a buddy system for ongoing support.

To be familiar with and ensure that all staff know the regulations re: fire emergency, lifting and radiation protection.

To attend regular updating sessions on these subjects, and generally ensure that knowledge regarding current nursing issues and clinical research is up to date.

Be aware of the Health and Safety at Work Act and its implications in the ward situation.

Utilise Q Pulse for access to the unit standard operating procedures and forms

To know and supervise Health Care Assistants and Learners in:

the correct care and use of hospital property.

the correct procedure for care and custody of patients valuables and property.

carrying out the agreed procedure for the care and custody of radioactive materials.

Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy.

To follow the agreed policies and procedures as laid down in the Nurses Procedure Book.

It is essential that all members of staff observe the code of confidentiality and complete Information governance training and annual updates.

Ensure any concerns are raised and escalated to your line managers
