Histology Associate Practitioner

Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for two Associate Practitioner (AP) posts that will support our registered Biomedical Scientists within the histopathology laboratory at York Hospital. This busy department provides a full diagnostic service to the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Applicants must be able to commit to and demonstrate the Trust Values and Behaviours.
The core hours are 08:30am until 5:00pm.

Main duties of the job
It is essential for an Associate Practitioner at the Band 4 level to be able to demonstrate competency at a Higher Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA Band 3) level or equivalent, and have significant experience of working in a histopathology or a similar pathology environment.
Experience of embedding and microtomy is desirable. Training will be provided.
The successful applicant must have excellent organisational skills, effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work using their own initiative, to meet tight deadlines. You must be able to work with minimum supervision.

Familiarity with hospital LIMS systems Experience of microtomy - able to produce tissue sections from embedded blocks Experience of embedding, morphological alignment of tissue within molten wax.
Education, Qualifications and Training
Essential
NVQ Level 3 in laboratory sciences or equivalent ( IBMS Certificates of Achievement part 1 and 2 with lab experience) plus additional theoretical or applied training in specific discipline
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
Previous experience in an NHS pathology laboratory Knowledge, competence and understanding of the role of histopathology in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
Desirable
Experience of working in an NHS Histology laboratory Supervisory experience Understanding of health and safety Knowledge of medical terminology
