Within the Paediatric Haemostasis Unit, a secondment opportunity has arisen to cover maternity leave for months.
The post holder will work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to provide care to children with inherited bleeding disorders. Working with the consultants, the practitioner will be expected to contribute to the running of follow up clinics for registered patients. You will be required to review current treatment plans and prescribe ongoing medication as well as educate and support patients and carers, related to paediatric haemostasis conditions.
The role will be an integral part of the paediatric haemostasis unit, ensuring a high quality and safe service to patients. It will also include providing education to wider teams within Oxford University hospitals and patients schools. Additionally, the service offers acute reviews of bleeds between -pm and the post holder would be expected to review, diagnose and manage treatment of acute bleeding episodes in conjunction with the consultants. They will also be expected to support patients with learning to administer treatments via both venepuncture and central venous devices.
Applicants are expected to have experience in advanced nursing practice and have a qualification as an advanced practitioner to include prescribing. The role will not require weekend, evening or night shift working patterns.
Main duties of the jobThe Oxford Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre (OHTC) is a designated comprehensive care centre caring for adults and children with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders. The centre primarily serves the local counties although patients may come from all over the country. The centre is also designated an international training centre of the World Federation of Haemophilia. It provides diagnostic and treatment facilities and is one of the largest such centres in the UK. Patients are also referred to the centre for investigation of possible bleeding or thrombotic disorders with diagnostic tests being carried out by our own clinical and research laboratories.
The haemophilia centre is primarily located at the Churchill hospital; however the paediatric department is within the Children’s Hospital at the John Radcliffe. The team consists of Haemophilia Advanced Nurse Practitioners and specialist nurses with support from Paediatric Consultant Haematologists and a physiotherapist.
The nurse will support the consultant in providing patient advice and training, review, provide school liaison and education, patient and family community support, GP support, as well as establishing a robust nursing education programme. He/she will support protocol and patient information development, develop nursing documents to support the care and management of patients; develop and maintain databases and enter data to the national haemophilia registry.
