TREASURER ROLE DESCRIPTOR

As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee (see below), the Treasurer maintains an overview of Women@theWell’s financial affairs. The Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.  The Board holds collective responsibility for these matters.

 

What we are looking for

 

A finance professional. A knowledge of charity finance is an advantage. Otherwise an enthusiasm to learn, drawing from sound commercial experience and an understanding of small charities. A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity. Clear communicator with the ability to bring the financial information alive to non-finance specialists. Willing to play an active role in areas such as forecasting, setting budgets, liaising with auditors.

 

The Treasurer will be asked to

 

  • Support and review the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees.
  • Ensure that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
  • Ensure that robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves, and cost management.
  • Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity. Oversee financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with Chief Executive and Finance Manager. Review the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan.
  • Support the development and review of the charity’s risk-management process. In collaboration with the finance manager, lead on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors.
  • Support the finance manager to ensure that accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, for example, the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies. Keep the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Chief Executive to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees.

Trustees are collectively responsible for the Charity pursuing its aims well, in good faith, and using its resources appropriately.  This includes each trustee:

ensuring the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit; complying with the charity’s governing document (acting within the powers of the board) and the law; acting in the charity’s best interests (and avoiding conflicts of interest, and declaring interests); managing the charity’s resources responsibly; exercising independent judgement; acting with reasonable care, skill and diligence; ensuring the charity is accountable.  

 

We are looking for someone who:

 

  • believes in the values and mission of Women@theWell;
  • has the ability to listen, question, deliberate, and plan, collectively and collaboratively;
  • is willing to learn about, or has experience with, the work of a small charity trustee board;
  • is willing to play an active role in the Board’s collective responsibilities and over time offer or develop skills in an area the board may need. 

We are seeking trustees from around the country, who share our values and able to attend board meetings in London (up to 5 in a year) as well as those local to our Kings Cross based service who can help us make more local connections.
