London, United Kingdom Trustwide Full time

Job overview

The Neurosurgery Department at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is a busy unit with daily elective and emergency admissions. The workload comes from a population of 2.2 million within North-West London and is maintained by 13 consultants, 17 registrars and 12 SHO-grade doctors, as well as the full multi-disiciplinary team of nurses, advanced clinical practitioner, therapists, managerial and administrative support. We work very closely with other specialties, including the hyperacute stroke unit, interventional neuroradiologists, oncologists and the intensive care team. All trauma cases are directed to St Mary’s Hospital, with non-trauma neurosurgical cases encountered in Charing Cross Hospital.

The department is also very active with academia and research and has a team of two professors, a number of academic consultants and research nurses running in excess of 30 trials currently.

The Division is committed to the Academic Health Sciences Centre vision: to deliver advances in research directly to our patients and to provide world-class clinical care and patient experience. There are numerous examples within the Division of clinical excellence, delivered within a financially sound environment, complemented by a range of high-quality research activities, extensive teaching programmes and highly regarded training posts. Our challenge is to harness our talents and partnerships for the benefit of our patients.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will participate in 6 month rotations between elective Neurosurgery at Charing Cross Hospital and Acute Neurosurgery at St Mary’s Hospital.

The main duties of the post holders will be attending outpatient clinics, research, audit and presentations at the various postgraduate teaching meetings and trauma calls during their St Mary’s rotation. Operative training in theatre is encouraged not just within neurosurgery but across all the presenting trauma specialties with opportunities in orthopaedics, vascular, plastics and general surgical cases.

The post holders will also have the opportunity to be involved in ITU ward rounds and critical care of neurosurgical and trauma patients and exposure to elective neurosurgery work at Charing Cross Hospital. There are plenty of opportunities to be involved in all aspects of a patient’s care with a multi-disciplinary team approach to patient management.

The post holders will be responsible for the day to day care of inpatients on the Neurosciences wards as directed by the Consultant. These duties involve the routine admission and organisation of investigations of emergency admissions as well as coordinating the discharge of patients, ensuring that the relevant information such as discharge letters and further investigations are appropriately organised.

The post holders will be expected to partake in teaching sessions with preparation of case presentations as dictated by the teaching rota
