Role Overview


The Senior Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the delivery of an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) across its entire lifecycle covering Investment Grade Audit (IGA), design, construction and measurement and verification (M&V). They will be supported by a multi-disciplinary team at the various stages of the process including Energy Engineers, M&E Designers, Construction Managers and M&V Analysts. The Senior Project Manager reports to the Operations Director.


Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities


  • Ownership of the customer journey from development opportunity to the completion of technical delivery.
  • Acting as the single point of contact with major clients for all technical status and coordination topics.
  • Own the project budget and P&L at each stage of the delivery to achieve the agreed targets including planning and adjusting of manpower levels as appropriate; cash, cost and billing management in line with company procedures.
  • Ensure programme milestones and internal and external delivery dates achieved at each stage of the project.
  • Ensure Breathe governance is followed and the necessary approvals received before cost or savings commitments made with a client or third party.
  • Ensure the technical solution and energy savings can be achieved without detriment to Dalkia Energy Services’ guarantee.
  • Be the day-to-day client lead and attending meetings and troubleshooting as required; representing Breathe in a professional manner at all times.
  • Selection and appointment of external consultants and managing and monitoring their performance.
  • Ensuring project procurement follows the company protocol.
  • Managing the asbestos information and controlling the risk.
  • IGAs
  • Responsibility for development and preparation of the IGA including detailed energy and operational savings calculations, financial and energy modelling, economic analysis, energy systems specification and conceptualisation.
  • Ensure outputs comply with the requirements of the programme management data base and validate/approve entries by Energy Engineers as required.
  • Engage with the Construction teams to ensure buildability issues and constraints are addressed.
  • Engage with the Commercial team for estimating inputs to IGAs including Tender Workbook Analysis (TWAs) and sub-contractor engagement.
  • Detailed Design
  • Planning the detailed design phase including resource schedules and sub-contract support with the Head of Design.
  • Identify, monitor, mitigate and manage project and operational risks and ensure the designs comply with all relevant regulations and guidance.
  • Work with the team, including the Principal Designer, to ensure compliance with IGP concepts, all Health and Safety & CDM regulations and obligations. Liaise with the Head of Design to check the designs are progressing to programme and with the required level of detail.
  • Engage with the Construction teams to ensure the designs consider buildability issues and risks are designed out prior to tender issue.
  • Review or produce the tender specifications and liaise with the Commercial team who will manage the procurement process including supporting the tender evaluation process.
  • Attend design meetings and sign offs with the Client and design team.

  • Manage the handover process to the construction team.
  • Be an ongoing support for the construction team on the project delivery to ensure the link from initial concept through to installation is maintained.
  • Engage with the M&V team to ensure we have all necessary measurement in place and agreed with the client for the ongoing collation of M&V reporting.
  • Ensure handover and commissioning processes are in place and that they support the M&V and guarantee requirements.

  • Support the handover to the M&V team at the end of the construction phase.
  • Be available to support the ongoing performance needs of the project, including site visits to investigate defects/low performance and attending client meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Education & Experience

  • BSc or BEng in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Comprehensive understanding of energy and carbon reduction across large commercial and industrial sites including healthcare is a must and a knowledge of building fabric projects would be advantageous.
  • A sound understanding of M&E engineering designs.
  • Experience working with major Plant: Boilers, Chillers, Pressure vessels, Air Handling Plant, Steam and Water systems, Motors, BMS, LV systems, CHP, Renewable Power, Understanding of HV systems, On-site generation
  • Mechanical engineering services background with a good knowledge of electrical engineering and general construction processes.
  • Working on live operational sites, often with critical engineering systems where retention of resilience is required.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office systems including Microsoft Word – including use for technical documentation, Microsoft Excel – including use for technical purposes, e.g. to determine component / sub-system performance requirements, model technical problems, statistical analyses, test records, etc. Microsoft Project – programming skills, and Engineering design software (Hevacomp, Cymap, IES)
  • Proven project management, attention to detail and the ability to deliver under pressure.
  • Commercially astute with proven construction management, ideally with knowledge of industry standard contracts such as NEC or JCT.
  • Organised, diligent, proactive, assertive, disciplined and commercially astute.
  • Comfortable communicating with all levels of Senior Management and Stakeholders.
  • Eligible to live and work in the UK with a valid driver’s license.
