Editorial Assistant
About Us
I Read Your Writing is a small independent editing company, established in 2017, with a focus on thoughtful, collaborative support for creative writers. We are passionate about nurturing authors and helping stories come to life. We are currently seeking a talented Editorial Assistant for a 4-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for continued growth and an ongoing partnership.
About the Role
This position has been created as part of an @Innovate_UK funded project which will explore and develop cutting-edge software to support editors and authors through the editorial process. As an Editorial Assistant you will assist with manuscript assessment, editing, commenting, and providing constructive feedback to authors, as well as play a key role in creating and testing this innovative software.
Key Responsibilities
- Software Development: Collaborate with the innovation team to provide insights and feedback that will help shape the functionality of the new editorial software.
- Reading: Develop a deep understanding of the story being told and identify both what’s present and what’s missing in the manuscript.
- Assessing: Accurately summarise content, relate what is needed for further development, and understand the author’s vision through conversation.
- Editing: Maintain the author's voice while strengthening the message, clarifying meaning, and providing sensitive editorial insight. Adapt to the author’s voice, revising text as needed without imposing your own style.
- Commenting: Provide clear, constructive, and gentle feedback, using comments and suggestions to begin a productive dialogue with the author.
- Giving Feedback: Ask insightful questions, listen carefully to responses, and offer thoughtful suggestions while respecting the author’s intent.
Skills & Qualifications
- Proficient in using Google Docs and Microsoft Word to comment and edit documents.
- Strong ability to understand narratives and conduct practical criticism.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- An empathetic and patient approach to working with authors.
- A keen eye for detail and the ability to balance constructive criticism with encouragement.
About you
We are looking for someone who can work 2-3 days a week for 4 months with a start date of 7th October 2024. The application process will include two interviews and a written assessment. All interviews and the work itself will be conducted remotely, with the opportunity for some in-person meetings if location allows.
The ideal candidate could be someone at the beginning of their editorial career who is looking to fast track their skills development and who is open to new ideas about working with creative writers of every level. This job is funded by the UK government and so we need someone who is based in the UK. It is a salaried role for a fixed term but would suit a freelancer who is looking to grow their portfolio of experience and develop their skills as an editor.
The right person for this role is patient, open-minded and ready to learn. They will bring an instinctive insight, compassion and aptitude for reading and understanding. It would help if they have some understanding of the theories around Practical Criticism as a literary approach. An official qualification in literature of any language is a bonus but by no means a pre-requisite.
We are looking for someone with natural abilities who is a self-starter, motivated by a keen interest in their work and a desire to support others to express themselves clearly. You will be open to all forms of literature, and keen to work with a great variety of writers with any kind of background or skill level. You will know that some rules are there to be broken, and open to discussing which ones they are
Each application will be reviewed on its individual merits, so please include a cover letter than explains why the job interests you, where you are in your current career and where you'd like to be, and a favourite book (from any time in your life).
If you are passionate about storytelling, have a keen editorial eye, and enjoy working closely with authors to bring out the best in their writing, we would love to hear from you
