St Helens UK, Merseyside, United Kingdom Glass Futures Full time

R&D Project Manager

Salary: £42-48k per annum, dependent upon experience.

Location: St Helens Site, hybrid work and occasional travel

About us

Glass Futures is a not-for-profit research and technology organisation, carrying out collaborative, cutting edge research in glass manufacturing and sustainability, made possible by a significant private and public sector investment of over £50m+ over the coming years.

The Role

An opportunity has become available for a new R&D Project Manager to join our team, assuming responsibility for key projects delivering new technologies and processes that will play a vital part in helping to decarbonise the global glass manufacturing sector and foundation industries. The role will be within the Glass Futures Projects & Innovation Team and will provide unique opportunities to work with leading global manufacturers and internationally recognised brands on projects based at commercial plants and St Helens.

Industry and project management experience is critical for this role due to the varied scope of responsibilities. We are keen to meet with people who have experience of delivering R&D projects in an industrial environment.

Experience of financial project management is essential: a key aspect of the role will be ensuring the projects proceed with a close adherence to budget. Experience of working with government funding bodies would be extremely desirable. The role will involve working closely with the Funding Bids Development team and therefore experience of preparing successful R&D grant funding applications would be beneficial.

It’s essential that you are motivated by Science or Technology and can provide practical support within an industrial environment. Glass or ceramics sector experience is advantageous for this role due to the nature of the business and projects.

Given the project-based nature of the work you may be expected to spend short periods of time away from home and are also expected to cover occasional shift work to support project trials.

Core responsibilities

  • Project management of high-level (up to multi-million-pound) industrial projects, including control of the project plan, schedule, risks and budget.
  • Developing and communicating project objectives, reviewing project proposals and plans.
  • Management of partners, stakeholders, funding agencies and monitoring officers.
  • Identification and determination of project responsibilities, phases and elements.
  • Determination of project specifications, performance standards, stakeholder requirements and expectations.
  • Data analysis and reporting, including written, oral, actual and virtual communication and demonstration.
  • Working with internal departments, such as Operations and Finance, to ensure that all aspects and requirements of the project needs are understood and met.
  • Close liaison with the glass fraternity team in disseminating project specific findings and recommendations.

Person Specification

We are looking for:

  • Experienced project managers who have delivered grant-funded R&D projects in industry (ideally under programmes funded by UKRI, BEIS or DESNZ)
  • MSc in areas related to Materials Science (Glass/Ceramics), Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering or Process Control or equivalent.
  • Formal training in Project Management, such as Prince2, PMP, Agile etc.
  • Knowledge and expertise in setting up and leading the Project Management process from conception to completion.
  • Competent in use of a range of project management tools, including Gantt charts, Risk Management and IP Management.
  • Adept at preparing and managing projects budgets and resource plans of more than £100K.
  • Experience of managing integrated teams of multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with adaptability for peers, stakeholders and international communications.
  • Excellent presentation skills with demonstrable networking and relationship building experience.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Glass manufacturing experience is very desirable.
  • Experience at preparing applications for R&D funding is desirable.
  • Experience at managing projects with academic and industrial partners is desirable
