Location: Onsite / Hybrid waterside, Paddington, M&S office

Rate payable: £400/day

Duration of assignment: 6 months


The Role

We are seeking a passionate Staff Software Engineer who will provide technical expertise, ship high-quality products, and operate with excellence. As a creative, curious, and fearless individual, you will be an integral part of our empowered, self-managing, multi-disciplinary engineering teams—designing, building, releasing, and maintaining products. Working as an equal partner with the Product and Delivery teams, you will deliver elegant and robust solutions to solve complex problems for our customers and colleagues. You will play a key role in driving our ambition to create a best-in-class software engineering team, environment, and culture.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Own complex tasks in the backlog and deliver them routinely with no significant issues.
  • Develop and improve standard frameworks and policies, ensuring they are understood and adopted.
  • Support other engineers in producing clean, quality code through code reviews and pair programming.
  • Drive DevOps practices to automate the product development lifecycle.
  • Foster a culture of experimentation and innovation.
  • Support the technical platform out of hours as a member of the support rota.
  • Contribute to and create Product Group OKRs and demonstrate responsibility for the entire team’s objectives.
  • Lead the measurement and improvement of software development metrics.
  • Promote continuous learning and improvement for product quality and stability.
  • Solve problems collaboratively and communicate decisions to customers.
  • Contribute to product planning and roadmap with an agile mentality.
  • Engage with product colleagues to improve value for the customer and understand ambiguous requirements.
  • Champion pragmatism in terms of commercial delivery and software quality.
  • Promote technology, innovation, values, and ways of working within the team and wider community.
  • Actively participate and contribute to Communities of Practice.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop less experienced engineers.
  • Assist with recruitment and onboarding activities.
  • Lead initiatives to advance Software Engineering practices by challenging the status quo.
  • Collaborate with technology, product, and design teams to deliver valuable features.
  • Define and uphold development standards and continually improve standards and practices.
  • Support QA responsibilities through PR reviews and automated testing.
  • Manage deployment, rollback procedures, and oversee deployment.
  • Work collaboratively or independently as the situation demands.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to product teams during sprints and development.
  • Suggest best practices and contribute ideas.
  • Embrace a "You build it – you own it" mentality in the DevOps team.


Your Profile

Key Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience developing best-in-class web applications that are secure and scalable.
  • Proficiency in designing, developing, and maintaining web applications using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Experience developing RESTful web services and APIs to support front-end functionality.
  • Significant experience with single-page applications using the latest Angular.
  • Expert-level skills in TypeScript and SCSS.
  • Demonstrable experience collaborating with Design and UX teams.
  • Experience with testing frameworks like Playwright and Cypress.
  • Proficiency in TDD & BDD and performance testing tools.
  • Experience working in an Agile DevOps environment, such as Scrum or Kanban.
  • Ability to mentor and provide constructive feedback to team members.
  • Strong understanding of software design principles and models, both in terms of object-oriented design and functional programming paradigms.
  • Experience with distributed code repositories and version control systems like GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with pair programming and extreme programming.
  • Understanding of accessibility best practices.
  • Experience with cross-browser support and supporting older devices.
  • Experience working in a CI/CD environment, preferably with continuous deployments.
  • Experience managing and building Azure resources.
  • Proficiency in observability and monitoring practices with an SRE mindset.
  • Overall 10+ years of development experience.
