Reading UK, Berkshire, United Kingdom NewOrbit Space Full time

Role Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented AIT Satellite Engineer to join our team of engineers in the assembly, integration, and testing of our flagship satellite designed for Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO) missions. This role requires a deep understanding of spacecraft systems and subsystems, as well as hands-on experience in producing test procedures, conducting various subsystem and system-level tests, and managing the entire AIT process.

About NewOrbit Space

NewOrbit is developing the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) system to be trialed in Ultra-Low Earth Orbit (ULEO). Operating in ULEO offers game-changing benefits to satellite applications; however, it requires a propulsion system that can counteract drag from atmospheric particles. Our mission is to leverage these particles as propellant, enabling long-duration missions in these orbits.

Please note that this is not a regular 9-5 job, but that we are an early stage start-up.

Responsibilities

  • Satellite Assembly: Work on the assembly of satellite components, ensuring all mechanical, electrical, and electronic subsystems are correctly integrated and meet design specifications.
  • Integration Management: Manage the integration process of various subsystems, including payloads, propulsion systems, and communication systems, ensuring they function cohesively as a single unit.
  • Testing and Validation: Develop and execute comprehensive testing procedures, including functional, environmental, thermal, mechanical, and vibration tests, to validate satellite performance under operational conditions.
  • Test Procedure Development: Create detailed test and verification plans for various development stages, including subsystem and full spacecraft verification.
  • Troubleshooting and Debugging: Identify, diagnose, and resolve issues that arise during the integration and testing phases, utilizing a methodical approach to ensure all systems meet the required standards.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of the assembly, integration, and testing processes, including test plans, results, and any deviations from standard procedures. Document any lessons learned and ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement and uphold rigorous quality assurance protocols throughout the AIT process, ensuring the satellite meets all safety and performance criteria before launch.
  • Spacecraft Operations Support: Support spacecraft operations, including acceptance of spacecraft hardware (platform and payload), and participate in mission/service delivery as needed.

Fundamental Requirements

  • Educational Background: Advanced degree ( MEng, MSc, or PhD) in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with a focus on satellite systems or space technology.
  • Industry Experience: Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in satellite assembly, integration, and testing within the aerospace industry, with experience in the build and test of spacecraft components and subsystems.
  • System-Level Understanding: Comprehensive understanding of satellite programs, preferably across the full project lifecycle
  • Testing Experience: Proficiency in conducting a wide range of satellite tests, including thermal, vibration, mechanical, and functional tests, with experience in using environmental testing chambers, vibration tables, and MGSE/EGSE.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce clear, concise documentation and reports. Experience in presenting findings to multidisciplinary teams and interfacing with external clients.
  • Tool Proficiency: Familiarity with tools and software used in satellite assembly and testing, such as CAD tools for mechanical integration, electrical testing equipment, and test automation software.
  • Quality Focus: Strong understanding of quality assurance principles and experience implementing QA protocols in aerospace or similarly regulated industries.
  • Hands-On Approach: Willingness to be hands-on with the assembly and testing of satellite systems, including working in clean room environments and operating specialized testing equipment.

Additional Requirements

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail, particularly in assembling intricate satellite components and conducting precise testing procedures.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment, with experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals.
  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and timelines, with a proactive approach to managing multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Innovation and Initiative: A strong drive for innovation, with the ability to suggest improvements to existing processes and take initiative in solving complex engineering challenges.
  • Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in satellite AIT and space technology, with a proactive approach to expanding knowledge and expertise.

Why NewOrbit

  • Pioneering Space Technology: Contribute to the development and launch of groundbreaking technology that will redefine satellite operations in ultra-low Earth orbits.
  • Impact and Ownership: Experience a level of involvement that allows you to have a significant impact on the success of our missions. Participate in the full lifecycle of satellite technology development and see your work take flight.
  • Equity and Competitive Salary: NewOrbit offers competitive salaries and company ownership stakes, rewarding dedication and excellence with a tangible stake in the company's success.

Application Process

Our interview process consists of four stages. The initial stage involves a call with Alex, followed by two interviews with our founders, Anatolii and Ruslan. If you progress successfully through these stages, you will be invited to complete a set of technical tasks, which will be reviewed and discussed during the fourth and final interview. If feasible, we would also like to invite you to our facilities in Reading as part of the final interview. Here you will get the chance to meet the rest of our team and tour our laboratories and office spaces.
