The role is working Monday-Friday, up to 45Hrs per week (8am-6pm)

The Salary for the role is up to £60000pa depending on experience.

Deputy Head Pastoral- Job Description

Overview of the role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our senior leadership team as Deputy Head Pastoral and Designated Safeguarding Lead. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in promoting the well-being, safety, and personal development of all students, ensuring a supportive and nurturing school environment. This role also includes the critical responsibility of leading the school's safeguarding and child protection initiatives.


This is a key role within the College involving collaboration with a wide range of senior and middle leaders.
The Role


Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management:
    • Lead and manage the pastoral care team, including Head of Wellbeing and Mental Health, Head of PSHE, Strategy Tutors, Counsellors, Attendance Officers and Student Services team.
    • Develop and implement pastoral policies and procedures in line with the school's ethos and values.
    • Oversee the school's safeguarding and child protection policies, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Duties:
    • Take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school.
    • Ensure all staff are aware of and understand their safeguarding responsibilities.
    • Manage referrals to external agencies such as social services and the police.
    • Maintain detailed, accurate, and secure records of concerns and referrals.
    • Provide support, advice, and expertise to staff on matters of safeguarding and child protection.
    • Liaise with the local authority and other external agencies as necessary.
  • Student Welfare:
    • Promote the physical, emotional, and social well-being of all students.
    • Coordinate and manage the provision of support services for students, including counselling and mentoring.
    • Lead initiatives to promote positive behaviour, attendance, and punctuality.
  • Student Services Management:
    • Oversee all aspects of student services, including admissions, attendance, and health services.
    • Ensure the provision of high-quality support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
    • Manage the delivery of career guidance, extracurricular activities, and enrichment programs.
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of student services and implement improvements as needed.
  • Parental and Community Engagement:
    • Foster strong relationships with parents and guardians, addressing concerns and providing regular updates on student welfare.
    • Liaise with external agencies, including social services, health services, and educational psychologists.
  • Behaviour Management:
    • Develop and implement effective behaviour management strategies.
    • Monitor and address issues of discipline, bullying, and student conflict.
    • Provide support and guidance to staff on behaviour management and pastoral care.
  • Staff Development:
    • Lead training and professional development for staff on pastoral care, safeguarding, and child protection.
    • Provide support and guidance to teachers and support staff in managing student welfare concerns.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Monitor the effectiveness of pastoral care and safeguarding initiatives.
    • Use data and feedback to inform improvements in pastoral provision and safeguarding practices.



Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Substantial experience in a pastoral leadership role within a secondary school setting.
  • Proven track record of improving student welfare and outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
  • Experience as a Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead, inspire, and motivate staff and students.


Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Additional qualifications in counselling, psychology, or related fields.
  • Experience working with external agencies and community organisations.
  • Previous experience as a Deputy Head or similar senior leadership role.
