In this role, you will drive the development of strategic merchandise/inventory plans and strategies that support the merchandising, marketing, and financial objectives of KILLSTAR. Based in our Brighton HQ, you will report to the Head of Product, work with our Chief Executive Officer, and be responsible for leading our Merchandising Function within the business.

Our ideal candidate would be an experienced people leader who is passionate about implementing best practices and establishing cross-departmental relationships between product, marketing, and operations. In this role, you will ensure that our buying and inventory budgets and timelines are achieved, leading a team of Senior and Junior team members who will be your partners in success. If this sounds like you, please read on

What You’ll Do:

  • Ensure that budgets and delivery targets are met through comprehensive oversight of the internal and external teams involved in the critical path of the entire product cycle.
  • Use both historical data and brand insight to create the product assortment and financial strategies to meet the companies' financial objectives.
  • Build, mentor and train the merchandising team to hit overall team goals and develop talent within the business.
  • Lead the merchandising team to be collaborative contributors to the overall Product team.
  • Formulate a commercial room-set strategy that will deliver true choice to the customer.
  • Range planning from department level down to category and subcategory.
  • Oversee that there is sufficient stock availability to satisfy customer demand, in line with OTB sales forecasts.
  • Control stock, markdown and order commitments in order to maximise profit, whilst achieving planned stock levels and terminal stock targets.
  • Assist in forecasts as necessary and lead the monthly OTB to ensure sales targets are met.
  • Partner with Design, PD and Marketing to identify and execute opportunities for sales and margin growth.
  • Recommend promotional events as needed to drive sales and manage seasonal inventory levels.
  • Coordinate internal SKU purchase and creation through analysis of historical performance and future trends.
  • Manage styles to the plan, ensuring that each item is a winner, and that the assortment is properly balanced across looks, silhouettes, fabrics, patterns, colour, price points, etc., taking the correct inventory position with key items and fringe and/or newness.
  • Work with Design, Product Development, Production and Logistics to manage the timeline on all product launches.
  • Ensure that vendor relations are optimal i.e., getting the best possible prices, quality and service levels with an appropriate level of “partnership” from the Market.
  • Be an expert in the KILLSTAR brand, products, policies, and workflows.
  • Collaborate with members of all departments to resolve issues and ensure cohesive operations.
  • Partner with other managers to collaborate and problem solve as a team, rolling information up to heads of department.
  • Identify process improvements and work on continuous improvement within the department and systems.
  • Partner with E-com and marketing to lead concise and results driven weekly trade meetings.
  • Report weekly, quarterly and seasonal sales lessons learnt in easy to understand formats for all areas of the business.
  • Analyse profitability between licences, collaborations and mainline products, and understanding what volume the company should be driving in each market.
  • Track and report royalties under retail channels and partner with Finance to report to customs.
  • Build strong relationships with the Wholesale Team to drive margin as well as volume.
  • Analyse and constantly review duty rates for all products, import/export countries and advise strategic sourcing to the Product and Sourcing Team.

Who You Are:

  • Adaptable: you are adaptable to change and willing to embrace new ways of working and conducting activities.
  • An Agile Learner: you learn quickly when something changes, you see failure as an opportunity, and you easily understand underlying structures and intentions.
  • Comfortable With Ambiguity: you are able to be compassionate yet tough, strong but flexible, and know when to zero in on the “grey area” vs. keeping it “black and white”.
  • Compassionate Leader: you are genuinely interested in the success of others and a champion for their goals; you are viewed as approachable and fair; you are personally committed and actively work to continuously improve yourself and your team.
  • Inspiring: the people you work with are motivated to do their best, and you inspire others by inviting their input, sharing ownership and visibility, and ensuring that everyone on your direct and extended teams is valued for their contributions.
  • Innovative: you are creative, have a commercial mindset and strive to develop new ways of doing things to help benefit the department and team.
  • Problem Solver: you geek out on simplifying complexity, discovering hidden answers, rooting out hidden problems, and finding solutions.
  • Reliable Communicator: you are good about keeping people updated about changes, and your written and verbal communication is clear and concise.
  • Solid Decision Maker: your solutions and suggestions are based on wisdom, critical thinking, experience, and sound judgement.

Your Experience Includes:

  • Accountability for the critical path of product development.
  • Managing a team including Entry Level, Junior and Senior Employees.
  • Presenting and leading buy meetings.

⭐️ Bonus If You:

  • Have a personal affinity for the alternative community and alternative fashion.
  • Experience in a fast paced, highly commercial environment.
