UK, UK, United Kingdom Sigma Lithium Full time

We are a start-up developing novel battery materials for high-performance Li-metal batteries and looking for a research assistant/electrochemist. It is an excellent opportunity to be part of a fast moving team building new technologies.

As the research assistant/electrochemist you will be in charge of making and testing batteries and lab maintenance. You should have strong lab experience and know lab-etiquette as you will be in charge of looking after the labs. Previous electrochemistry and battery assembly experience is desired but not necessary as you can gain these skills working with our senior scientists given that you have a good technical background. However, it is important to keep in mind that battery cell making requires manual dexterity, attention to detail, precision and handling small or fragile materials/parts. You should be able to troubleshoot and solve technical problems and independently manage day-to-day laboratory tasks.

We are looking for a candidate who is well organised, follows lab-safety rules, and is proactive in prioritising tasks. It is important for the candidate to have a passion for science, engineering and innovation.

Skills

1. Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.

2. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

4. Proficient in data collection, analysis, and report writing.

Responsibilities

  1. General lab duties such as cleaning and drying battery cell components and upkeep of gloveboxes and lab areas.
  2. Electrode material inspection, qualification and coin and pouch cell assembly in glovebox.
  3. Battery testing using electrochemical workstations and cyclers
  4. Identify and troubleshoot defects or inconsistencies in the assembly process.
  5. Logging and reporting electrochemical data and its initial analysis with the view to making further improvements.
  6. Destructive part analysis on allocated cells.
  7. Waste management.
  8. COSHH and SOP management.

Qualifications

  • A chemistry/materials science master’s degree OR more than >3 years of lab experience in a relevant industry (materials science, electrochemistry, engineering)
  • Basic skills with MS Office/Office 365 suite of programmes
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and labware.

Attention to detail and accuracy in experiments are critically important as you will be developing novel batteries.
