Job Description
Apprentice Driver
Newcastle
£29,400 rising as you qualify
Why us?
We go beyond. For everyone. Our vision is to be the most loved, progressive and responsible way to travel for generations to come. Now we're looking for the people who can deliver this, every day.
Since we took over on the East Coast mainline, we've been changing the face of rail travel. Our new Azuma train has brought faster journey times, more space and greater reliability. Our exciting plans to embrace new ideas, experiences, backgrounds and ambitions make this the ideal time to join.
Becoming an Apprentice Train Driver with our organisation is a life-changing opportunity that requires dedication and focus. This isn't just a job, it's a role that demands significant commitment and resilience. You'll need to manage an intensive training program, a challenging schedule, and a lifestyle shift that requires balance between work and personal life. If you're ready to take on this exciting challenge, we want to hear from you
The role of an Apprentice Driver at our organisation is highly sought-after and comes with significant responsibilities. Our selection process is thorough and can take time, so before you hit "apply," make sure you've carefully reviewed the requirements and are fully prepared for what's ahead.
What to expect:
As an Apprentice Driver, you'll undergo a 52-week comprehensive training program. The first 18 weeks are classroom-based and include homework assignments, so a strong commitment to study is essential. You'll be supported by our expert trainers throughout this period as you build the foundational knowledge needed to become a Qualified Train Driver. (The training is undertaken at our Training centre in York, so please consider being away for considerable periods of time)
Once you've successfully completed the theory and passed your assessments, you'll move on to practical training on our network, driving real trains with real passengers. Under the guidance of an experienced Driver Trainer, you'll apply your classroom learning to the field, mastering both technical and non-technical skills.
The program also awards a Level 3 qualification, and the apprenticeship structure allows us to reinvest in your training and development.
Key responsibilities:
- Study hard and perform to your best ability during the intensive training period
- Pass all assessments on your way to becoming a Qualified Train Driver
- Adhere to the highest standards of safety, both operational and occupational
- Ensure proper communication, following company and industry standards
- Build strong working relationships with colleagues across the business
- Maintain a focus on providing exceptional customer service while ensuring safety and punctuality
Essential requirements:
- Over 20.5 years old at the time of application
- GCSEs in English and Maths (A-C), or equivalent; GCSE in ICT (A-C) is desirable
- Live within a 60-minute commute to the depot
- Be able to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and nights
- A proven track record of working in responsible roles, adhering to rules and procedures
- Strong concentration skills and the ability to work independently for long periods
- Resilience under pressure, with an unwavering focus on safety and performance
- Punctuality and professionalism are essential
