The Payments risk management team wishes to become even more specialised in Risk & Control Management. Resulting in a need to adopt a more proactive approach in addressing emerging threats to protect our members and the services whilst minimising Nationwide’s exposure to operational, conduct and regulatory losses and to protect the reputation of the Society.


We have an opportunity for a Risk and Controls Manager to join our team in the identification and assessment of operational, conduct and regulatory risk within Payments and specifically across the Payments Cards and Paymod Programme incorporating change, operations and service.


You will work closely with senior level internal and external stakeholders from across the Society and independently within Payments. You will be joining a dynamic and creative team, with the drive for further development and progression. This means that the Risk and Controls Manager will have a great opportunity to shape the activities and bring past expertise and new ideas to the forefront of the role.

What you’ll be doing

You'll carefully assess the impact of operational, conduct and compliance risk for key change programmes and initiatives as well as carefully analysing any relevant documentation to ensure controls and risk mitigants are appropriate and proportionately managed.


Proactively engage with key stakeholders, senior management and delivery leads to identify dependencies into and out of Payments whilst applying your problem-solving skills to mitigate risk and control exposures.


Actively lead risk assessment and support scenario planning exercises and ensure that these are carried out on a regular basis, are insightful, forward-looking and actionable.


You’ll assist the wider first line risk function to proactively identify process and control weaknesses, escalating / reporting these through correct governance and developing remedial action plans ensuring these are robust and timely.

As a minimum requirement you’ll have:


  • Experience and understanding of the design and delivery of Risk and Controls Management frameworks, policies, reporting and processes.
  • Experience of conducting Risk Assessments and providing credible risk opinion
  • Experience of Risk reporting tools, ensuring excellent risk governance is maintained and all risks, issues and actions are logged and tracked regularly through to successful completion
  • Experience of incident management and raising of loss events as per the Nationwide risk and control standards
  • A blend of technical risk expertise and business acumen and able to understand the full risk and controls landscape and anticipate the changes within the industry and financial services.
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment and good understanding of customer outcomes, implementing risk and control frameworks inc. risk reporting
  • Strong communication skills and a proven track record and ability to influence across the Society and associated Partners at an executive level
  • An organised, professional and meticulous approach, you’ll have no problem managing a high volume and complex workload
  • A self-motivated ethic with a strong passion to deliver exceptional results
  • Subject matter expertise within operational and conduct risk with experience of managing risk and control frameworks and methodologies across financial services
