Overall Role Purpose:

The Applications Engineer role is primarily office-based, focusing on the estimating and initial design of generator and UPS projects valued at £100,000 and upwards. The successful candidate will engage in client-facing meetings and site visits, supporting Key Account Managers with technical expertise to fully understand client requirements.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Key Account Managers and customers to understand project specifications.
  • Estimate and cost projects based on the client’s brief or technical specifications.
  • Meet tender return deadlines and liaise with the supply chain to gather project-specific information.
  • Create quotations that comply with client specifications while identifying potential value engineering opportunities.
  • Prepare tender documents, compliance statements, and bid letters.
  • Conduct front-end cost studies, designs, and feasibility assessments.
  • Support Key Account Managers with customer meetings and site visits.
  • Work with the technical team to produce necessary drawings and technical submittals for tender returns.
  • Maintain and update internal price lists, ensuring system wording is up-to-date and client-friendly.
  • Participate in project handovers to explain design and cost elements.
  • Attend daily, weekly, and monthly Sales & Estimating Meetings.

Experience and Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in estimating high-value capital projects, project management, or mechanical/electrical commercial environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and a balanced technical and commercial outlook.
  • Practical knowledge of electrical and mechanical engineering.
  • Proficient in Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Experience in managing supply chains.

Desirable:

  • Qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Ability to read mechanical or electrical drawings.
  • Familiarity with generator installations and associated equipment.
  • Knowledge of BMS protocol languages (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, BACNet).
  • CSCS card.
  • Experience with building services plant (electrical and mechanical).
