Simulation Engineer / Battery Modeller (Electrochemical) – Job Specification
Role Overview:
As a Simulation Engineer / Battery Modelling (Electrochemical) you will focus on developing and implementing electrochemical models that simulate key processes such as charge transfer, ion transport, and degradation in battery cells. Your role is critical in using experimental data to create accurate models that predict battery performance under various conditions, contributing to our advanced battery characterization and simulation platform. Your work will help customers optimize their R&D efforts, improving efficiency, longevity, and safety of batteries without the need for extensive physical testing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement detailed electrochemical models for various battery chemistries (e.g., lithium-ion), simulating processes like charge/discharge, ion transport, and degradation.
- Collaborate with the experimental and testing teams to validate models using real-world battery testing data, and refine models based on experimental results.
- Use software tools (e.g., MATLAB, COMSOL, ANSYS, or other electrochemical modelling platforms) to simulate battery cell behaviour under different operating conditions.
- Investigate degradation mechanisms (e.g., capacity fade, impedance growth, and thermal runaway) and incorporate these phenomena into the models for more accurate predictions.
- Contribute to the development battery characterization and simulation platform, ensuring models are integrated into a user-friendly interface for customers.
- Analyse simulation results and provide insights that help customers optimize their battery designs, focusing on enhancing efficiency, safety, and performance.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams (e.g., electrical, thermal, and mechanical engineers) to ensure that electrochemical models integrate seamlessly with other system-level simulations.
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in battery modelling, electrochemical processes, and energy storage technologies, applying new insights to improve modelling accuracy.
Requirements:
Essential:
- 3-5 years working in industry or research application-oriented environment.
- Expertise in electrochemical modelling, including mechanical and physics-based modelling.
- Proficient in PyBaMM, GT-Autolion, and COMSOL for electrochemical simulations.
- Experience developing and validating physics-based battery models.
- Strong understanding of battery cell degradation, performance, and efficiency modelling.
- Strong enthusiasm for battery technology and sustainability, aligning with the company's mission and values.
Desirable:
- Experience with cell design, including electrode and electrolyte material optimisation.
- Familiarity with advanced simulation techniques for aging and degradation modelling.
- Ability to work closely with testing teams to validate model outputs with experimental data.
- Knowledge of multi-physics simulations combining thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical behaviour.
- Strong project management skills for coordinating complex modelling projects.
