Hybrid Renewables Projects/Project Finance Commercial/Legal Counsel

UK, UK, United Kingdom SSQ Full time

Our Client is a highly entrepreneurial, small but rapidly growing technology-agnostic energy developer, a licenced specialist electricity and gas supplier, and the UK’s leading horti-tech energy operator and optimiser. This is an excellent opportunity for a very commercially minded UK qualified Project Finance/Energy Projects lawyer with around 5-10 years PQE, who is looking to join a small and dynamic team, working in a hybrid commercial and legal role.

You will be one of three practicing lawyers in the business, reporting to the Legal and Commercial Director.

This is a very rare and exciting opportunity, for a commercially astute projects lawyer looking to make the move into a much more commercial role in the renewable/sustainable power sector, with extensive opportunities for broader professional development.

Role and Responsibilities

The core responsibilities of the role will be:

  • Hybrid legal/commercial role perfect for an exceptionally commercial and numerate energy transactions lawyer looking to make the jump into a fast-moving commercial project development position.
  • Ideal candidate will have substantial UK electricity generation/networks commercial experience, with ambitious and entrepreneurial drive. In-house experience, or a relevant secondment, would be viewed positively.
  • Strong candidates will likely be from an Energy projects or project finance background and will feel comfortable with expanding over time into a more generalist energy practice (potentially including energy M&A, project, asset and structured finance, commercial, regulatory, joint venture structuring, construction etc.), albeit with extensive external support.
  • Candidate will have strong interest in UK electricity market dynamics, subsidy regimes, policy and business models. Curiosity regarding new technology, market and political developments impacting the industry is a must.
  • Opportunity to grow into a rounded energy transactions lawyer with a varied and interesting deal flow, acting as commercial lead on a wide variety of energy transactions across numerous technologies, ultimately leading commercial negotiations from start to finish, before managing the execution of the agreed transactions.

This is a small, flexible team and the role will therefore evolve to fit the successful candidate's skillset and interests. There will be an opportunity to expand your practice into broader areas of the business if desired, both legal and commercial.

Skills and Experiences

All candidates should have:

  • an unusually commercial mindset – comfortable 'taking a view' and identifying and pursuing commercial objectives that underpin the terms of a transaction
  • an ability to identify problems and risks before they arise and develop and implement practical solutions
  • transaction management experience, including managing junior lawyers / external advisors
  • confidence working and making commercial decisions independently with light supervision
  • a positive and motivated, goal-oriented approach to your work, as well as being comfortable expressing and defending opinions on key commercial decisions
  • a keen interest in the renewable and sustainable energy industries
