Description

Owlstone Medical’s mission is to save 100,000 lives and save health care providers $1.5B, with several major projects underway to develop disease screening and diagnostics based on detection of volatile metabolic products on breath. Owlstone Medical has a new Scientist position available within our analytical science department. We are looking for a hands-on experimentalist to join a team of scientists developing, optimising and evaluating our analytical technologies and breath biomarker discovery services.

Key Tasks / Accountabilities

Duties

  • Planning and/or conducting experiments for achieving project deliverables.
  • Interpretation and dissemination of key experimental results to the wider team/programme
  • Preparation of chemical solutions
  • Preparation of TD sample tubes
  • Operation of TD-GC-MS instrumentation
  • Theoretical research activities
  • Ensure experimental work adheres to department processes including health and safety.
  • Conduct peer review of team members’ experimental plans and reports
  • Maintain accurate up to date Laboratory records.
  • Other duties as assigned per qualifications and project needs.

Requirements

Education & Training

  • The successful candidate is likely to have a degree in a relevant scientific discipline.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of working in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience independently planning, conducting and interpreting experiments.

Desirable

  • Practical experience of working with GC / LC systems.
  • Coding (python) knowledge and application
  • Experience with cheminformatics
  • Experience using GC-MS / LC-MS data analysis software
  • Experience (theoretical/practical) with thermal desorption (TD) systems.
  • Experience of working with MS instruments, such as Thermo Orbitrap, Mass selective detector (MSD) or Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SiFt-MS).
  • Experience of processing primary data (GC, LC, MS, etc) into informative secondary data.
  • Understanding/experience of biological/biochemical interpretation of compounds and/or metabolic pathways.
  • Experience of scientific literature review

  • Ability to follow procedures accurately.
  • Ability to grasp new concepts, processes and techniques quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to plan, conduct and write up experiments.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks to a consistent standard.
