Wax for Life includes re-waxing and repairs (first introduced in 1921) and Barbour Re-Loved an upcycling circularity initiative. Each year over 70,000 wax garments are sent back to Barbour globally to be repaired, rewaxed or altered.


Position Overview:

We currently have an opportunity for a Garment Technician to join our growing and fast-paced Womenswear Technical team based at Barbour House, South Shields. You will support the women’s technical team with new season development and production, helping ensure we continue to deliver premium product in line with the business-critical path and budget. The ideal candidate will have prior experience working as a garment tech, be a good communicator, have a good eye for detail, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development, fitting and sealing of outerwear ranges – working closely with the design team to ensure premium quality products meet target prices, and are delivered in-line with the business’ critical path.
  • Create and issue detailed, accurate, concise sample reports to suppliers – must be able to clearly communicate to suppliers and team members how to correct fit or make issues.
  • Improve and standardise fit and construction in each range.
  • Ongoing risk assessment of products through development phase, ensuring compliance with product safety and legislation, and requesting/ reviewing test reports where relevant.
  • Create, update and issue size charts.
  • Update and issue BOMs.
  • Identify and help solve potential problems in development and production.
  • Gain expert knowledge of our suppliers’ capabilities and help direct production where needed.
  • Support QC processes and help identify and solve any potential issues.
  • Daily communication with suppliers regarding quality and technical issues, deadlines, and sample delivery.
  • Track development/ production and maintain department critical path
  • Work closely with suppliers to understand their strengths and capabilities - support and, when required, visit manufacturing sites to carry out quality checks and, together with the Technical Lead, QA team and Supply Chain, assess manufacturers for suitability for production.


Skills and Experience:

  • A degree within the fashion industry/ clothing technology field.
  • Experience working in a similar role across product development, garment technology & quality control.
  • Comprehensive understanding of fitting, fit issues and garment construction is essential – plus an awareness of commercial boundaries.
  • Previous use of PLM systems, or similar.
  • Experience of working with overseas suppliers.
  • Effective problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Proactive, assertive, organised, capable of prioritising workload and able to deliver to given timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Computer literate with good Microsoft office skills.
