Long Eaton UK, Nottingham, United Kingdom Smart Surgical Appliances Limited Full time

Job Purpose:

The prototype technician (PT) plays a key role in a variety of design and development processes at the early stages of various surgical device programmes of work. The role will require the PT to play a pivotal role in the prototype engineering department to support R&D (and other departments from time to time) in developing and creating 1:1 scale prototypes of surgical device components and products. The PT will need to engage and work directly alongside R&D to interpret a variety of designs, translating them into the appropriate form and function for lab and field testing and evaluation. The key responsibilities of this role will include:

Responsibilities

  • The prototype technician (PT) will be responsible for the rapid manufacturing of small parts.
  • Production of parts with tolerances down to 0.1 mm will be expected.
  • Parts will ideally be made in-house, but – where appropriate – with the support of external suppliers.
  • In-house manufacturing techniques will include resin 3D printing, silicon moulding (using 3D printed moulds) and simple metalworking.
  • The prototype technician (PT) will be expected to suggest and implement design changes to improve the products being prototyped. These alterations may range from minor dimensional adjustments to more fundamental design work.
  • Given the nature of the products being developed at SSA, there is a frequent drive to miniaturise components, and the prototype technician (PT) should provide input into the mechanisms and design decisions that can enable this.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience making functional prototypes with mm scale features.
  • Detail-oriented and extremely hands-on.
  • Highly creative and artistic, and able to contribute towards design aesthetics.
  • Excellent CAD skills (SolidWorks and/or Rhinoceros).

Desirable Skills and Abilities

  • Hold a first or upper-second-class degree in an appropriate model-making degree.
  • Demonstrable experience with resin 3D printing and casting.
  • Experience producing and interpreting engineering drawings (both hand-drawn and generated from CAD).
  • Experience working within a high technology field, e.g. aerospace or automotive.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work easily with teams
  • Experience working with ISO13485 quality management systems
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, mainly when communicating technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to self-motivate when working independently, prioritise tasks, and work effectively to manage and meet deadlines
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly and work with minimum supervision
  • Excellent report writing skills and experience in MS Office
  • Basic knowledge of clinical and biomedical engineering
  • Fluent in English
