We are an independent organisation set up by the government to deliver the national public engagement campaign, raise awareness of smart meters and drive adoption of this technology in everyone's homes. Smart meters are essential building blocks in the creation of a cleaner, greener energy system for the future.


We are looking for Public Affairs Manager with detailed knowledge of the workings and dynamics of the UK Government and politics, and experience delivering high-profile public affairs programmes, to join our team in our London office


You will deliver effective public affairs campaigns and projects to influence political and professional stakeholders in Westminster, local authorities across GB, businesses and third parties to persuade them to advocate for the benefits of smart meters. Working as part of a talented and creative team, you will help to deliver a dynamic public affairs programme which will bring the importance of smart meters to life, galvanise support and get opinion-formers behind smart meters. Whilst primarily focusing on delivering public affairs activity and programmes to Westminster politicians, you will also support the delivery of our GB-wide microbusiness activity, working with professional stakeholders and raising awareness of, and encouraging them to understand and advocate for, the benefits of smart meters for small businesses.


Key tasks/responsibilities


  • Develop and lead a programme of activity advocating to politicians and stakeholders in Westminster, small businesses, local authorities and the third sector, including meeting with and briefing politicians and key opinion-formers to discuss the smart meter roll-out and our policy positions
  • Develop and deliver resources for use by elected representatives and other opinion-formers across Great Britain
  • Identify opportunities and produce written and other materials for external and internal publication, including stakeholder magazines, newsletters and website copy for third party organisations.
  • Develop and implement strategy for PA activity in cross-cutting projects such as private renters and microbusiness
  • Project manage our public affairs activities, including our events for opinion-forming audiences and our presence at external events held by third parties
  • Represent our organisation at third-party events, including developing and delivering presentations, taking part in panels and facilitating/chairing events as required
  • Keep abreast of relevant political and policy developments, alert colleagues and provide summaries and proactive responses as required
  • Manage the organisation’s public affairs monitoring system, ensuring that it is fit for purpose and offering value for money. Use this service to ensure that the PA team keep abreast of relevant policy developments, alerting colleagues and formulating proactive responses where appropriate
  • Work closely with colleagues in Wales and Scotland to ensure co-ordination of outreach and messages for GB-wide political audiences
  • Maintain systems for reporting on the impact of the public affairs programme to the Chief Executive and Board directors
  • Line manage the Public Affairs Officer, and support them in running the public correspondence function and engaging with APPGs and Committees
  • This role will involve travel across Great Britain and occasional evening and weekend working


Skills, experience and competencies


Essential


  • Detailed knowledge of the workings and dynamics of the UK Government and politics
  • Experience delivering high-profile public affairs programmes
  • Knowledge of third sector and business stakeholder organisations and experience in influencing them
  • Ability to take on responsibility and use initiative to prioritise work and to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal/writing) with high-level attention to detail and quality control throughout written work
  • Creative thinking when it comes to developing outreach activity
