Embedded Software Engineer R&D

The R&D Engineer Embedded SW is member of an international R&D development team located in Cambridge, UK and Schliengen, Germany. The R&D team is developing highly sophisticated sensing devices to optimize production processes and for environmental emission monitoring to meet legal requirements.

The R&D Engineer Embedded SW acts in a team of scientists and engineers for hardware and embedded SW development, starting from circuit ideation, schematics, layout and prototype production through to Embedded SW programming, testing and handover to production.


Responsibilities:


The R&D Engineer Embedded SW is responsible for Embedded Software Design.A medium-level of understanding of HW design enables them to discuss, design and implement HW close solutions. As part of a team, they will design HW and SW concepts for approval-relevant requirements (SIL, QAL1), implementing and testing metrological and functional algorithms, taking functional safety (SIL) and certified emission monitoring (QAL, AMS) into account


Maintaining existing products within the scope of their life cycle, revising the Embedded SW components as required by HW design changes


Participating (depending on qualification) in the development/testing of software and hardware for PC/tablet/smartphone systems


Documenting work in the form of coding documentation, test documentation and functional documentation, which can be used as a basis for the creation of manuals and the approval of the devices

Experience:


Programming Languages, Standards and Tools


  • Bare metal programming in C, C++
  • MISRA C Coding Standards
  • Code testing with Razorcat Tessy, PC Lint
  • Continuous integration / continuous delivery CI/CD with Jenkins, Gitlab, Bitbucket
  • GIT version control, Gitlab, Bitbucket
  • Build management with GNS make, Cmake


Target Processors


  • Versatile 8/16/32 bit processors
  • Renesas/Atmel/Microchip/ST32 and corresponding compilers
  • Embedded processor IDEs like Eclipse, Keil


Code review and care of legacy code


  • Re-engineering of code and bug fixes
  • Code review and testing
  • Code deployment, version and variant management


Optional


  • FPGA programming, VHDL
  • Experience on safety certified code design
  • Experience on SW testing according to ISO 28119
  • ISTQB certified tester
  • Linux, Android, RTOS, AWS


The following HW design skills would also be useful


  • Analog and digital HW design
  • Understanding of schematic and PCB layout
  • Ideation for new sensor technologies, innovative circuits, signal-to-noise ratio, interference suppression, analog sensor design
  • Embedded SW testing on HW level

  • Altium Designer, Eagle, CADstar
  • Comsol Physics Field Simulation
  • FPGA design
  • ASIC design


Location: Cambridge UK


Travel: Occasional travel may be required to other European site esp. Germany or France
