Reports to: Head of Communications
Duration: 24 months FTC, part time hours of 3 days a week
Location: Location neutral - this role may be based anywhere outside of the UK that BBC Media Action operates. Candidates must have the right to live and work in the location of employment.
Salary: Competitive, on relevant local scale

Job Information

Do you have a passion for the role of media in international development? Do you have experience working in the third sector on written content, channels and campaigns that effectively raise awareness and support?
We are looking for a communications officer to support on a range of internal and external communications activities - including keeping our editorial calendar updated, writing newsletters and web content, supporting on events planning and helping to keep our social media channels lively - all in support of our goals to increase our brand awareness and support, inside and outside the BBC.
You'll play a frontline role in protecting BBC Media Action's reputation as well as clearly communicating its position and publicising its programmes and services to key audiences, including donors, media and stakeholders. As part of the BBC Media Action team you'll develop and maintain a wide range of relationships with key contacts across the BBC and externally to achieve maximum impact.
We're looking for a strong writer and communicator, ideally with experience working in a cross-cultural, global organisation. Effective written and spoken communication in native level English is essential.

This role is part of our small but high-performing global Communications team and reports into our Head of Communications, currently based in London. This role may be based anywhere that BBC Media Action currently works. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

• Handle media inquiries or work with stakeholders to get the BBC Media Action's point of view across.
• Provide advice and use initiative, to generate ideas to get important messages across.
• Work across promotion of charity issues, projects and programming as required.
• Research and organise corporate/press/public facing events and activities, including responsibility for producing and managing small to large scale events (i.e. researching guest lists and venues, guest liaison, writing briefings, risk assessments, coordinating brand assets, using social media at events when appropriate) and leading on creative and sourcing materials.
• Maintain and refresh databases of journalists or opinion formers, getting feedback from events and establishing regular communication between BBC Media Action and them; produce and distribute newsletters to opinion formers from senior stakeholders in the regions.
• Work as part of a wider communication team to handle enquiries about the BBC, playing an important part in emergency response and crisis communications.
• Use social and digital media, as well as more traditional forms, to communicate messages in the most effective way.
• Provide administrative support where necessary including media monitoring, managing the office inbox and team editorial calendar, and regular reporting.
• Contribute to - and lead where required - evaluation of work, collecting and examining data and working with colleagues to assess impact of communications work.
• Support the running of social media channels and assist with the production of assets for use online and in social media.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

Essential
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills, (spoken and written), including the ability to present clear and concise professional communications to a range of audiences.
• Prior experience in relevant environment
• Experience of using a wide range of digital and social media.
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ensure centrally-held data is accurate and complete, regularly updating databases to ensure compliance with the Data Protection Act and the BBC's data protection policy.
• Strong research skills for producing opinion former lists/guest lists for events.
• Good interpersonal skills to establish and maintain credibility and effective working relationships with a wide range of contacts - journalists, senior managers, broadcasters, editorial staff and opinion formers.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Native-level fluency in English required.
• Ability to work effectively in a team and lead on projects yet work on own initiative, to solve problems when required.
• A good working knowledge and use of social media for promoting content and news stories.
• Excellent organisational abilities and attention to detail - ability to prioritise.

• Knowledge and/or experience of the media/broadcasting environment
• Knowledge and/or experience of the international development sector

Location details
The role will be based in one of BBC Media Action's offices in Africa or Asia. Current BBC Media Action offices are in the following cities, and the role could be based in any of these, subject to the prevailing security situation at the time of appointment: Abuja, Addis Ababa, Dar Es Salaam, Delhi, Dhaka, Freetown, Hargeisa, Jakarta, Juba, Kabul, Kathmandu, Lusaka, Nairobi, Phnom Penh, Tunis, Yangon.

BBC Media Action operates a zero-tolerance policy concerning all forms of abuse and exploitation of vulnerable people. A police background check may form part of the recruitment process.
