Job Description: Finance Director


Position Overview

We are looking to hire a qualified accountant with a minimum of 5 years post qualification ideally with hedge fund, fund administrator or prime broker experience to join our innovative startup in the Hedge Fund and fintech industry based in London, UK. You will have a dual reporting line into the CFO on a finance functional basis and the COO on other matters.


About Altimist

Altimist is building a new suite of financial services with a goal to enable everyone to move, manage and maximise their money more easily built on a Web 3-based financial platform. Additionally, Altimist is expanding into the hedge fund space by developing cutting-edge algorithmic trading engines, designed to optimize investment strategies and deliver enhanced returns.


Responsibilities

Ensuring that all elements of Altimist’s financial processes are properly conducted, controlled and maintained, including but not limited to:

  • Financial Management & Reporting:
  • Oversee preparation and analysis of financial statements in compliance with GAAP/IFRS and hedge fund-specific standards.
  • Oversee shadow net asset value (NAV) calculations, investor reporting, and fund performance analysis.
  • Manage the audit process, liaising with external auditors to ensure successful completion of fund audits.
  • Supervise capital activity reporting (subscriptions, redemptions, distributions).
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial reports, highlighting key trends, results, and forecasts.
  • Financial planning:
  • Develop and oversee annual budgets and financial forecasts for the firm.
  • Analyse cost structures and identify areas for efficiency improvements.
  • Execute cash flow management processes, while ensuring capital and liquidity levels meet regulatory requirements and align with the firm’s risk appetite at all times.
  • Treasury and finance operations:
  • Manage all core accounting functions, including accounts receivable/payable, general ledger, cost accounting, and revenue recognition.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls by documenting key business processes and accounting policies.
  • Manage relationships with banks, the fund administrator and accountants.
  • Optimise cash management processes, including FX hedging and margin requirements.
  • Regulatory Financial Compliance & Taxation:
  • Ensure finance-related compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g. FCA, HMRC or other regional authorities).
  • Manage the preparation and submission of tax filings, coordinating with tax advisors to optimize tax efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the accounting firm and other stakeholders to prepare and submit annual accounts, tax returns, and any other filing requirements.
  • Oversee payroll processing, including pensions, HMRC filings, and other related functions to ensure full compliance.
  • Risk management & compliance:
  • Manage internal stress-tests, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of information provided to the FCA and other regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure that all relevant elements of our risk management framework are properly conducted, controlled and maintained, including but not limited to:
  • Understanding and mitigating key elements of our financial risk profile.
  • Implementing robust financial control systems.
  • Maintaining appropriate insurance coverage.
  • Ensuring compliance with audit and governmental regulations.
  • Reporting risk issues to the COO and CFO.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
  • Chartered Accountant or equivalent qualification required.
  • Experience within a hedge fund.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial planning, capital and liquidity management, and regulatory reporting.
  • Experience with regulatory frameworks, particularly in the UK, including working with the FCA and other regulatory bodies.
  • Strong proficiency in financial management software and systems, including Xero, Excel, etc.
  • Proven ability to manage cross-functional teams, including external accountants, auditors, and financial advisors.
  • High degree of integrity, ethics, and professionalism, with a commitment to financial transparency and accountability.
  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced start-up environment with a strong sense of initiative.
