Title : Field Services Engineer

Location: This is an exciting opportunity to join Thales as a Field Service Engineer supporting our contracts in the Gulf region. Initially this position will be based in Portsmouth, UK for initial training before moving out to Bahrain to continue training.

Primary Purpose of the Role:

As a Principal Field Services Engineer, you will be responsible for the supervision and conduct of deployment, setting to work and in service support of Sonar and or Electronic Warfare Systems deployed on Royal Navy and export customers Ships / Submarines.

Principal Relationships:
  • Accountable through the Field Services Manager to the Head of Field Services Engineering
  • Other Field Services Engineers in your team
  • Other Field Service Managers and teams within the department
  • Project teams
    • Programme Managers
    • Service Delivery Managers
    • Project Planners

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:
  • Be responsible for the Health and Safety of all Thales activities carried out by you and engineers you are leading:
    • Completion of Risk Assessments.
    • Completion of COSHH Assessments.
    • Recommend safe systems of work.
    • Be ultimately accountable for your own day-to-day welfare.

  • Support to both Royal Navy and Export Platforms in Defect Rectification:
    • Conduct and Supervise Front-line support including Fault diagnosis and testing as well as acceptance trials both in harbour and at sea.
    • Provide On-Call telephone support to our customers.
    • Write site visit reports.

  • Support to both Royal Navy and Export Platforms Maintenance Periods / Refits:
    • Conduct Pre-Upkeep Maintenance Assessment (PUMA) inspections.
    • Conduct and Supervise scheduled maintenance activities
    • Advise the Service Delivery Manager of stores required for the refit.
    • Escalate engineering issues to the Field Services Manager or Service Delivery Manager as required.
    • Write post maintenance reports.

  • Weekly reports to the Service Delivery Manager Field Services Manager or Service Delivery Manager as required
    • Activities undertaken.
    • Upcoming activities.
    • Successes, challenges, opportunities.
    • Identify any support required from the project or department.
  • Identification of your own personal and professional development and provide Technical Support, Leadership and be a Mentor to other Field Service Engineers.
  • Compliance with all export control rules and regulations including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
  • You will also perform additional ad-hoc duties that will arise from time to time that are consistent with the nature of this position.

Key performance Indicators against Responsibilities and Tasks:

This role and the Field Service Engineering Team is continually monitored for performance and some of the following Key performance indicators (KPI's) will be used
  • Quality of work produced against agreed standards.
  • Delivery to timescales.
  • Delivery to budget.
  • Performance against Thales key values.
  • Performance against mandatory training and the development of team competence in Thales Sonar and Electronic Warfare Systems.

Expected Competence Level:

Skills (underpinning Knowledge)
  • Demonstrable experience in conducting installations and or support engineering preferably in a maritime environment.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of complex systems.
  • A working knowledge of project plans.
  • Able to use a range of IT tools.
  • Ability to train, coach and support other Field Service engineers.

Applicants must be eligible to obtain UK SC Level Security Clearance without restrictions and be UK National only.

Experience:

As a Principal Field Services Engineer you will have a significant track record of performing well in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably dealing with Complex Systems (Electrical, Electronic and Hydraulic). You must be capable of taking the lead in resolving issues, problems, questions and conflicts for your team. You will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels in the spoken and written word. Your experience will demonstrate your high level of self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure are vital.

Qualifications and Certification:

Desirable:
  • HNC/HND in a relevant subject or equivalent.
  • Have attained, or be working towards an appropriate professional status or equivalent
