Abergele LLSE, Abergele, United Kingdom Conwy County Borough Council Full time
Who You Are

You possess basic literacy skills and hold a full EU driving license. You have experience with manual work, safe manual handling, and a fundamental understanding of health and safety practices in waste collection. Familiarity with council recycling policies and prior experience in recycling or refuse collection are beneficial, as is a solid geographic understanding of Conwy County. You communicate well in English, while Welsh language skills are advantageous. Enthusiastic and self-motivated, you excel in team settings and can effectively engage with the public, advising them on recycling policies. You are skilled in problem-solving and operational challenges like route finding and handling breakdowns. Capable of assessing risks, making routine service decisions, and performing routine vehicle maintenance checks, you are physically fit for outdoor work, long-distance walks, and heavy lifting daily. Good visual and hearing abilities are crucial for this roadside role.

What the Job Involves

The role entails driving a Conwy County Borough Council vehicle to collect nappies and Absorbent Hygiene Products waste from households, following predefined routes, while ensuring high service levels and adhering to safe working procedures. An in-cab screen will be used to complete rounds and report issues, requiring you to engage effectively with the public and resolve on-site service challenges. You will manage a pick-up vehicle, collect and empty recycling containers, ensure containers are returned, and clear any spillages, operating within a single-operator vehicle context. Responsibilities include maintaining vehicle cleanliness, completing paperwork like timesheets and vehicle logs, assisting with team member induction and training, and performing any reasonable duties such as managing missed collections or litter picking. Working 37 hours weekly, including mandatory bank holiday work and potential Saturday work during Christmas, you are expected to support and adhere to the Authority’s equality and health and safety practices, fostering positive working relationships internally and externally. As part of your responsibility under the Council’s Corporate Safeguarding Policy, you will also ensure the welfare of vulnerable groups.
