Technical Architect

Location: Remote - must be UK based

Work Pattern: Full Time/Contract

Security Clearance: BPSS

The Company:

At Amber Labs, we are a cutting-edge UK and European technology consultancy that prioritises empowering autonomy, promoting experimentation, and facilitating rapid learning to provide exceptional value to our clients. Our company culture is centred around collaboration, where all colleagues, regardless of their role, work together to minimise risk and shorten delivery times. Our team consists of highly-skilled cross-functional consultants, analysts, and support staff.

About the Role:

The Technical Architect will focus on supporting established platforms and architectures, working closely with software delivery teams to ensure robust and scalable solutions. This role is not a traditional solution architecture or platform/cloud delivery position but instead emphasises integrating and optimising software applications within the existing ecosystem.

You will leverage technologies such as Java, Spring, Camel, microservices, and others in the stack. While direct experience with the entire stack is not required, familiarity with related technologies is critical. This position reports to the Lead Product Architect and involves deep collaboration with multidisciplinary teams using Agile and DevOps practices.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Build trusted relationships with clients and act as an advisor.
  • Encourage cross-team communication to ensure alignment and address strategic dependencies.
  • Partner with external vendors and suppliers as needed.
  • Engage in front-end change processes, providing triage support, impact assessments, and high-level solution designs.
  • Acquire strong business domain knowledge for the areas your products support.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and provide meaningful business and technical context to product teams.
  • Own the technical delivery, risk management, and service stability of your products.
  • Foster a positive technical culture, embracing Agile, DevOps, and quality engineering principles.
  • Develop product roadmaps, identifying innovation opportunities and aligning decisions with strategy.
  • Design scalable, robust technical services within your product’s scope, aligned with user needs, business objectives, and sustainability goals.
  • Contribute to project deliverables such as solution architecture documents and operational test plans.
  • Offer technical leadership to internal and external teams to ensure solutions are fit for purpose.
  • Advocate for the reuse of patterns, tools, and components across teams.
  • Comply with technical assurance and governance processes, including status reporting, RAID management, and adherence to standards.
  • Drive continuous technical innovation and improvement, contributing ideas and leading their implementation.
  • Engage with the technical community to identify and share best practices through blogs, tech talks, or events.
  • Mentor developers and architects, set technical standards, and support skill development within teams.
  • Ensure product supportability and compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Provide architecture responses during operational escalations, business-critical events, and incident investigations.
  • Participate in retrospectives to prevent future issues and improve incident management processes.
  • Protect the integrity of the products and ensure alignment with overall service objectives.

Essential Technical Expertise:

  • Strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and/or Apache Camel.
  • Experience with microservices architecture and related design patterns.
  • Understanding of containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with API gateways like Kong EE.

Additional Technology Stack (Preferred Exposure):

  • Messaging and event systems: RabbitMQ, Kafka.
  • Monitoring and logging: ELK Stack, Grafana.
  • Web servers and tools: Nginx, Consul, Vault.
  • Databases: MongoDB, experience with scheduling systems or job schedulers.
  • Cloud platforms: AWS or similar.

Other Skills:

  • Strong understanding of Agile and DevOps principles.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex technical solutions into clear deliverables.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams in fast-paced environments.

Benefits:

  • Join a rapidly expanding start-up where personal growth is a part of our DNA.
  • Benefit from a flexible work environment focused on deliverable outcomes.
  • Receive private medical insurance through Aviva.
  • Enjoy the benefits of a company pension plan through Nest.
  • 25 days of annual leave plus UK bank holidays.
  • Access Perkbox, a global employee rewards platform offering discounts, perks, and wellness resources.
  • Participate in a generous employee referral program.
  • A highly collaborative and collegial environment with opportunities for career advancement.
  • Be encouraged to take bold steps and embrace a mindset of experimentation.
  • Choose your preferred device, PC or Mac.

Diversity & Inclusion:

Here at Amber Labs, we are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace for all. Our commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion includes:

  • Valuing the unique experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds of all employees and creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued.

  • Prohibiting all forms of harassment, bullying, discrimination, and victimisation and promoting a culture of dignity and respect for all.

  • Educating all new hires on our Diversity and Inclusion policies and ensuring they are aware of their rights and responsibilities to create a safe and inclusive workplace.

  • By taking these steps, we are dedicated to building a workplace that reflects and celebrates the diversity of our employees and communities.

What Happens Next?

Our Talent Acquisition Team will be in touch to advise you on the next steps. We have a two-stage interview process for most of our consultants. In certain cases, we may include a third and final stage, which is a conversation with the company Partners. This will only be considered if deemed necessary.
