Primary Purpose of the Role:

To manage the Systems Engineering Processes to company and international standards for a major project. Includes significant Line Management responsibility. To provide systems engineering and engineering decision authority.

As a system engineer you work in an international multidisciplinary team on the design, development and validation of a command & control system. Your team consists of representatives of the customer, suppliers of subsystems and other parties involved. In the team you are responsible for the technical design. Activities include amongst others:
  • Discuss operational needs together with the customer.
  • Design the architecture of the command & control system.
  • Define the functional behaviour of the system.
  • Define interfaces between the Thales command & control system and 3rd party subsystems.
  • Manage technical issues of subcontracts during the development of the Mission Solution.
  • Demonstrate the solution to the customer.

Principal Relationships:

As part of the Thales Engineering process you will interact with the following key roles:

Project team members including: Installation, Testing, Commercial, Purchasing, Planning, Project Management Office, Heath, Safety, Quality, Environment

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

The list below is not exhaustive nor will individuals be expected to be able to undertake all of them. They are given as a guide as to the expected duties of the grade.
  • The development and management of Requirements Specifications for the System and Subsystems level.
  • Good understanding of the development lifecycle and lifecycle products.
  • Interfacing with the client, to define the content and format of test specifications.
  • Defining and authorising Test Specifications.
  • Impact Analysis / Variation
  • Compliance / Customer requirement resolution
  • The defining and authorising of Design Descriptions and Verification Requirements.
  • Provide technical advice to the Engineering Group Manager on all technical matters and management issues related to the Systems Engineering Group.
  • To provide technical direction and leadership to the Systems Engineering community.
  • Interaction with key stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain a structured Systems Engineering process and activity.
  • Provide technical specifications.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to the Project Systems Engineers for their responsibilities and design decisions
  • Responsible for the preparation of resource plans and the budget for the Systems Engineering Group. Manages this budget to ensure that the project objectives are met within budget.
  • Approves estimates for project activities and manages the Systems Engineering Group to ensure work is completed on time and within budget.
  • Develops and trains Systems Engineering resources to ensure that adequate and qualified staff are available to perform and/or lead the design/requirements developments for the project/products, including acceptance requirements.
  • Represents the Systems Engineering Group on the Change Control Committee. Review change proposals, approve ECN's on behalf of the Engineering Department
  • Keep abreast of technical development both within and outside of the company.
  • Identify training, development and performance needs via the PDD and AAD processes, for the Systems Engineering community under your control.
  • To assist Head of Systems Engineering to strengthen the engineering capabilities.

Key performance Indicators against Responsibilities and Tasks:

This role is continually monitored for performance and as such some of the following typical Key performance indicators (KPI's) will be used

  • Financial performance of the Systems Engineering team under your control

Expected Competence Level:

Skills (underpinning Knowledge)
  • Able to use a range of IT tools.
  • Has a sound ability to define the use of System Engineering tools.
  • Has knowledge of configuration control processes.
  • Can manage a complex project through a defined design process and is able to tailor CHORUS2 (Systems Engineering) process to project needs.
  • Can define and use metrics as part of Quality assurance & control to change and re-model a System Engineering process.
  • Working knowledge of project plans.
  • Has knowledge of Engineering Safety Management
  • Has knowledge of Engineering Security Management

Experience:
  • The Principal Systems Engineer is the technical focal point for the System Engineering process and must be able to resolve all issues, problems, questions and conflicts in the entire system. This requires frequent handling of new and unusual issues therefore a proven record of working in a Systems Engineering Management function is required.
  • The post holder should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels in the spoken and written word. A professional competent outward appearance, self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure are vital.
  • The success of the Systems Engineering job family relies on the interaction of its engineers at all levels, therefore evidence of team working is required.
