Deputy Head of Conflicts


This is an exciting opportunity with an international law firm for a conflicts lawyer to support the leadership of the conflicts team and address complex conflicts matters across the firm's network. The role involves identifying, assessing, and managing conflicts of interest. Including legal, commercial, and client relationship conflicts, in line with legal frameworks, risk policies, and business strategy. This position requires collaboration with senior stakeholders, sector heads, practice groups, and the fee-earning community, and holds a high level of decision-making authority.


The role also includes supporting ethical conflict resolution, managing business relationship issues, and drafting conflict wording for bids and Outside Counsel Guidelines. Additionally, you'll assist with broader General Counsel projects, such as internal investigations, regulatory matters, and reputational risks. The firm is looking for the role to be based in London, however other locations can be considered.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Liaising with partners and senior stakeholders on client strategy and managing client relationships in terms of commercial conflicts to resolve conflicts issues.
  • Leading on internal investigations and other queries which involve conflict of interest or confidentiality issues.
  • Acting as a point of escalation for conflict issues from Conflicts Senior Managers
  • Training the team on the conflict rules and processes, and occasionally partners and other fee earners and Legal PAs.
  • Attending Conflicts Committee meetings and advising the Committee of decisions and issues that the Committee needs to proactively manage.
  • Supporting and advising the Conflicts Committee’s in putting together business cases and making recommendations for the Conflicts Committee's decision.
  • Understanding and identifying wider commercial, risk and reputational issues at client acceptance/conflict checking stage.
  • Advising on lateral hire conflict issues.
  • Advising on (and drafting) engagement terms relating to conflicts and confidentiality.
  • Reviewing and maintaining the firm’s conflict and confidentiality policies.



Key Qualifications & Experience:

  • England & Wales Qualified Lawyer (6 PQE)
  • Must have extensive conflict lawyer experience at an international law firm, in particular experience of managing commercial conflict issues.
