Job DescriptionJob Title: Engineer – Materials Technology (Metallurgy)Location: Barrow-in-Furness. This is an onsite positionSalary: £35,802 + depending on skills and experienceWhat you’ll be doing:Provide support in delivering authoritative metallurgical advice and guidance across all functions—particularly Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain—on emerging issues submarine build and commissioningExtend metallurgical support to the broader BAES community, including facilities/infrastructure, Naval Ships, and Global Combat SystemsAssist Submarine design engineering teams by advising on appropriate materials, processes, and corrosion management strategiesParticipate in the review and upkeep of Process Instructions, Workmanship Standards, Operating Procedures, and Risk AssessmentsAssist in conducting and reporting metallurgical investigations and research, including sample preparation, laboratory analysis, and the production of technical reportsContribute to the evaluation of new materials and innovative manufacturing processesAid weld engineers in assessing pipe welds, structural welds, and cladding through sample preparation and mechanical testingSupport the review of supplier technical capabilities and special processes related to metallurgy, corrosion prevention, and welding engineeringYour skills and experiences:EssentialHolds a degree (BEng/BSc) in Metallurgy or Materials Science, or an equivalent vocational qualificationFamiliar with both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical principlesExperience in metal forming and processing techniquesCapable of effectively communicating with a range of stakeholdersDesirableHands-on experience within workshop settings, including metallurgical testingExperience of heavy industrial processesBenefits:As well as a competitive pension scheme, BAE Systems also offers employee share plans, an extensive range of flexible discounted health, wellbeing and lifestyle benefits, including a green car scheme, private health plans and shopping discounts – you may also be eligible for an annual incentive.The Materials Technology in build support team:As an Engineer, you will be part of a team that is working on technology management to develop material solutions for existing engineering problems within submarine projects.
