The departments of Physics and Electronic Engineering are both in periods of rapid, transformational evolution, in the transitional phase of a process to form a new School of Physics, Engineering and Technology.
The distinctive collaboration between Engineering and Physics in forming this new School, provides exciting opportunities for growth. To support such growth we are investing in additional technical roles to both increase capability and diversify skill sets. We are therefore seeking a number of technical professionals to support teaching and research in various areas of the School. Electrical/Electronic Specialist, to provide expertise and frontline support to staff and students in the newly formed Engineering Teaching Facility. A facility that includes teaching areas covering Fluids and Thermodynamics, Materials and Mechanics, Renewable Energy, Electrical Machines, Hot metal/heat treatment, Rapid prototyping and fabrication and CAD/CAM which go to support our Engineering programmes. The role also presents an exciting opportunity to be involved in pioneering global research in a Russell Group University.
**Role**:
The role will be the lead Electrical Specialist taking responsibility for the operation of the Rotational Machines Laboratory and Renewable Energy Electrical Laboratory. These laboratories have recently been established and contain £500k of the latest 3 phase didactic training systems, solar power collection, grid tied battery system and intelligent car charging system and associated electric vehicle. You will be responsible for the production and maintenance of the documentation covering the equipment and its operation including health and safety. You will be familiar with the role of an Electrically Authorised Person and during the employment probationary period be willing and able to be trained to undertake this role in the context of the Rotational Machines Laboratory and the Renewable Energy Laboratory. You will directly manage a small team that will provide direct support to a mixture of laboratories within the larger facility preparing them for teaching activities.
Located in the Heslington West Campus, your team will facilitate the running and maintenance of, and the design, development, construction, modification and to a wide variety of standard and specialised equipment. Work undertaken by the team is diverse and includes: Schematic capture and PCB layout, 3D CAD modelling, 3D printing, repair and maintenance of existing equipment, providing advice on electrical/electronic issues.
You will also undertake appropriate administrative activities as delegated by the Technical Operations Manager. The post is part of a larger team of technical staff supporting the School.
**Skills, Experience & Qualification needed**:
- Degree or equivalent in appropriate science discipline or HNC, HND and appropriate significant experience;
- RSci/REng or willingness to work towards these or equivalent professional qualification;
- A broad understanding of the detail of BS7671:2018 and initial and periodic testing;
- In depth knowledge of 3 phase electrical systems to component level;
- In depth knowledge of electronic test and measurement equipment;
- A broad understanding and in depth knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations of the work area, for example COSHH and risk assessment;
- Demonstrable experience of designing, constructing, or maintaining electrical equipment
- Experience of successfully managing and motivating others to achieve results, prioritising to deadlines and demands.
