Job Introduction

See Hear is BBC Two’s topical magazine programme for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people in the UK. We have a rare opportunity for a talented film maker to join the team and help to shape our content over the next six months.

The much loved programme covers a wide range of topics relating to Deaf people; challenging injustice, profiling high achieving deaf people and celebrating the culture of the Deaf community. The series is presented in British Sign Language with audio interpretation and subtitles to make it accessible to everyone.

See Hear is part of the BBC Studios Unscripted Productions team in Bristol. The unit is responsible for some of TV’s best loved shows, including Countryfile, Gardeners’ World, Antiques Roadshow and DIY SOS.

Main Responsibilities
- To self-shoot creatively and efficiently on location.
- To work effectively to ensure all content is thoroughly researched and meets the BBC’s editorial standards.
- To be involved in researching and setting up filming, including the identification of suitable programme contributors, locations and storylines, working closely at all times to the editorial brief of the Series Producer. To recce people and places in advance of filming and, where appropriate, negotiate access.
- To script material effectively.
- To prepare for edits and, where necessary, offline edit creatively and efficiently in the available time and within the allotted budget.
- To proactively embrace new technologies, new ways of working and innovation.
- To write commentary script, direct commentary recordings and supervise aspects of post production, attending the dub and programme online as appropriate.
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and the UK Deaf community is essential for this role. Proficiency in British Sign Language is also essential, the successful applicant will be working with BSL users.
- A track record of directing your own short films for television.
- The ability to self-shoot to a high standard.
- Experience of scripting your own films.
- Familiarity with research techniques and sources for the verification of the accuracy of material.
- Proven ability to understand complex information and translate that into compelling television.
- Experience of finding and working with contributors and presenters.
- An ability to create original journalism and strong visuals within a programme.
- The ability to oversee the work of researchers on the team.
