Gardener

As a Gardener for the National Trust, you’ll be a hands-on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Seaton Delaval Hall. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance, and the highest standards of horticulture, you’ll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.

To maintain a garden team presence the roles working days would ideally be Tuesday to Saturday. There is potential for some flexibility, so please contact us if you have any questions. You may also be asked to work bank holidays and evenings.

**Hours**:Full time 37.5 hours per week working Tuesdays to Saturdays.

What it's like to work here:This Northumbrian country house is one of the National Trust’s more recent acquisitions. The close-knit team has a great relationship with the local community and has made a real impact through a creative programme of events and family friendly activities. At Seaton Delaval Hall you will be working in a Grade II* registered park and garden, within which sits the hall itself, a Grade I listed building of outstanding significance.

A twentieth century garden layer adds further interest at Seaton Delaval Hall, with a Parterre and a Rose Garden which is under restoration. We encourage visitors to explore the site, and this role will play a part in delivering the great service and warm welcome that we have become known for.

What you'll be doing:As part of the garden team, you’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You’ll be passionate, enthused and knowledgeable about the varied plants and features within the garden. You will also be the responsible for managing volunteers so that they know that their contribution to the maintenance of the garden is essential and valued. You will be reporting directly to the Senior Gardener.

With an excellent plant knowledge, you will monitor the gardens for pests and diseases, identify areas that require additional work and allocate resources accordingly.

With daily checks required on the garden areas, you will be thorough and have a good eye for detail. You’ll interact with the public on a regular basis, answering their questions, or helping with tours of the garden, sharing your knowledge of the property, or leading/supporting visitor participation days.

**Who we're looking forWe'd love to hear from you if you’re**:

- an enthusiastic horticulturist and hands-on gardener, who’s worked with hard landscaping before
- knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail.
- experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance
- a driver with a full licence
- able to manage a demanding outdoor role
- good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people
- equally confident working within a team, with volunteers or on your own
- able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
