Librarian and Careers Lead

**Background**:
The Library is equipped with computers, photocopying facilities, journals, and newspapers and houses the careers education or 'Futures' information. The Library cataloguing system is a fully computerised, web-based system.
The Librarian line manages a part time Library Assistant.
**Job Purpose**:
In conjunction with the Library Assistant:
To help maintain an environment within the Library that encourages and enables students to develop research skills and become independent learners.
To further develop the Library as a key force for the development of Literacy in the school, including, for example, author visits; reading or poetry competitions; research activities and individual or small group help to students whose literacy skills need improvement.
To assist with Year group library based lessons particularly with Years 7, 8 and 9
To supervise lunchtime library activities (board games, homework etc.) for the whole school from 12.30 to 13.45
To research, promote and track careers across the school, including the work experience program for Year 11.
**Job Summary and Key Tasks**:
Responsible for helping to manage the Library, its literature and the environment.
Giving advice on resources to be developed/purchased and on initiatives to promote the Library to the leaders of the curriculum areas.
Responsible for helping to create and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning.
**Key Result Areas**:
- To help the Librarian review the present resources in the centre in consultation with the curriculum managers and to advise the Leadership Group on action required.
- To help catalogue the resources on the computer and to maintain stock records.
- To help organise the resources, books, periodicals and to develop resource banks.
- To assist with development and delivery of a library skills course for students when they enter the school.
- To help develop strong links with all curriculum areas to encourage the use of research skills as an integral part of curriculum delivery.
- To facilitate the development of students to become independent learners.
- To help establish and implement policies for classification, arrangement, presentation and control of library materials.
- To offer students guidance and personal support where necessary.
- To assist with instigation and organisation of key library events, such as author visits and competitions.
- To organise the Year 11 work experience program.
- To research career opportunities for students and promote them regularly through weekly newsletters and regular assemblies.
- To organise an annual careers fair, held in the Autumn
- To manage the careers budget
- To work with independent careers advisors (currently CXK) who deliver impartial careers advice. To include organising the advisor and booking appointments for students in need.
**Person Specification**:
- Good ICT skills
- Good communication skills
- Experience of working successfully with a diverse range of people
- Ability to work independently
- Confidence, imagination and drive
- Flexibility and adaptability
**Knowledge and Experience**:
- A good understanding of Library systems and an ability to maintain them
- An understanding of the needs of students in the 11-18 age range
- Some awareness of the National Curriculum and GATSBY benchmarks for careers
**Terms and Conditions**
Hours: 24 hours a week, 8.00 - 4.30 Monday - Wednesday
**Salary**: D24 £27,084 - £14,149 pro rata
The position is term time only plus 3 days Insets
An entitlement to join the Kent County Council Local Government Pension Scheme is applicable.
A six month probationary period is applicable.
Occupational health clearance
