PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To provide and maintain the highest possible standard of clinical care for the patients and their families during the peri-operative period. To ensure all documentation is completed accurately, giving, and receiving patient centred handovers. To prepare the operating theatre for surgery, participating during theatre team briefing/debriefing and the Surgical safety checklist. To maintain cleanliness and IPC within the operating department, and to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.

Transportation of specimens, blood products and a variety of ancillary equipment. General peri-operative patient care duties including circulating within the operating theatre, escorting patients to theatre for surgery. To ensure that stock levels within the theatre environment are replenished and prepared for the next day. Efficient and effective use of available resources.

Act as circulating person in theatre during surgery under the supervision of the registered team. Follow guidelines on maintaining patient’s notes and documents, ensuring legibility and accuracy of nursing records, being aware of the legal implications of these documents. Monitoring and assessing patient’s condition, responding to changes in condition, proposing/making changes to care plan as required. Participating in the maneuvering and the positioning of conscious and unconscious patients.

Handover and transferring responsibility of care to colleagues, ensuring appropriate information regarding patient care requirements is relayed. Reporting and documenting all relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team. Ensure effective communication exists between all healthcare professionals caring for patients within the peri-operative environment, promoting harmonious working relationships and safe working practices. To take all measures to ensure the safety of patients.

To report all accidents/incidents promptly to the theatre coordinator and completing the relevant CSSA incident form correctly. To be familiar with all departmental and emergency equipment, ensuring it is cleaned and stored away safely at the end of the day. To ensure the safe care and custody of patient’s property and valuables in line with the agreed procedure. Ensure that CSSA procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with Clinical policies and department SOP’s To assist in carrying out audit and quality monitoring as required in relation to the service.

To undertake additional tasks as directed by the theatre coordinator/theatre team.
