The Cancer MDT Coordinator will work as an integral member of multi-disciplinary teams, providing a pro-active and facilitative clinical pathway navigation service by supporting clinical teams in ensuring that patient care is delivered in an effective and timely manner in accordance with national guidance
- The post holder will be support the pro-active organisation and planning of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, which will require regular consultation with clinical teams and a wide range of other health professionals, including booking teams and other support staff, both locally and at other providers.
- The post holder’s remit is informed by relevant and contemporary national cancer policy and revisions to these frameworks as they are published.
- The pro-active collection and dissemination of relevant clinical data and information is a crucial part of ensuring the success of the role and the data management elements of this post should not be underestimated.
- To provide efficient and administrative support to consultants and their teams.
- To work in close co-operation with staff and other health professionals to ensure a first class service.
- To be an active and supportive member of the Cancer department.
- To regularly monitor systems for receipt of electronic referrals.
- To be responsible for the updating of electronic patient records with patient’s details.
- To act independently, ensuring that daily tasks and ongoing workloads are prioritised and completed in agreed timeframes.
- To prioritise incoming correspondence, ensuring that it is promptly dealt with by the appropriate member of staff.
- Scheduling and corresponding with patients both verbally and in writing regarding their appointments, organising letters, maps and information sheets.
- Photocopy correspondence as necessary and prepare documentation for MDM’s and New Patient Referral meetings.
- Liaison with diagnostic teams to agree US / MRIs and book OPAs on the same day and requesting images and matching these on ICE system.

- To receive all telephone calls to the department ensuring the caller’s needs are clearly established, accurate messages taken and passed on promptly, and callers are passed on to other colleagues when appropriate.
- To take any follow up action as agreed with a caller and to keep them informed of any outcomes.
- To ensure that patients and visitors are communicated with effectively and politely, and patient focus is maintained. To ensure that any enquiries are handled in a courteous and tactful manner and problems are dealt with promptly and efficiently.
- To provide the appropriate support to any caller as required by their emotional status, which may involve advising patients of changes of appointment dates, or dealing with complaints.
- To be aware of clinicians’ whereabouts throughout the day, in order to advise callers or visitors of the same, and to arrange meetings and appointments as necessary.
- To be conversant with Microsoft Outlook, ensuring mail is routinely read on a daily basis.
- To provide cover for other administrative staff within the department when absent.
- To attend and participate in departmental meetings held on a regular basis.
- To take steps to resolve callers’ complaints and concerns. Where this is not feasible, to advise callers of the PALS Service and if necessary of the complaints’ procedure. Issues should be escalated to the Cancer Services Manager as appropriate.
- Liaise with ICS team to create ad hoc clinics
- Liaise with wards to book rooms for adhoc clinics
- Liaise with Primary Care Practices to clarify / request missing information items.
