**Is diagnosis and problem solving ‘Your Thing’?**
We are looking for an excellent problem solver to work within our Plant maintenance team, to carry out regular services and vital maintenance on our plant machinery, to support the TrainCare Centre with your mechanical/electric expertise, to ensure we achieve the highest standard of safety and plant equipment availability.
At Northern, we play a vital role connecting millions of people to work, leisure and education opportunities.
We operate 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England. But our vision is about more than just train travel. It’s about setting a new standard for customer experiences. And that means building a different kind of workplace. One that values individuality and celebrates differences. Somewhere we can work together, have fun, and get stuck in to making our customers’ lives easier. A place that goes out of its way to create incredible opportunities for everyone to grow and be the best we can be every single day.
So, if you’re smart, forward thinking, passionate and full of fresh ideas like we are, you could play your part in making it happen.
**About the role**:
As a Plant Team Member within our Newton Heath TrainCare Centre (TCC), you'll be instrumental in keeping depot plant equipment running smoothly and in achieving the highest standard of safety and plant equipment availability. You will also support the production department in meeting the daily availability and reliability targets.
You will report to the Engineering and Facilities Manager at Newton Heath TCC and work alongside our maintenance team members.
It’s an exciting time to join our engineering team, as we are transforming and developing skillsets, to help us get the right people, on the right units, at the right time. You’ll need to work a range of shifts, from the early hours of the morning and including nights, plus weekends and Bank Holidays, it’s vital that you’re flexible and that you live within 60 minutes’ drive of our Newton Heath TCC.
If this sounds like your thing, we’d love to hear from you.
**Key responsibilities**:
This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:
- Regular services, maintenance, and repairs on our plant machinery
- Conducting emergency repairs to our high standards
- Ensuring the equipment is readily available for all team members
- Prioritise your daily workload to ensure daily targets are met in a timely manner
**About you**:
We expect you to be qualified with a level 3 NVQ or a recognised apprenticeship and have good technical knowledge covering electrical, mechanical, plumbing, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Ideally this would include 18th Edition electrical qualifications. We would also like to see a demonstration of your ability to successfully complete further competency training, as required. What’s really important is an ability to work as part of a team and to be able to think on your feet, in sometimes demanding situations.
We’re also looking for the following:
- Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to liaise and work effectively with colleagues
- The ability to prioritise and be adaptable when things can change as well as managing your day to day workload
- Showing initiative where necessary, whilst continuing to adhere to our working policies
- Working under pressure and the challenging targets that are set by the Quality and Facilities Manager
- Confidence to build relationships with a wide variety of people and teams
- Experience in diagnosing and solving problems
- Ability to work to instructions, safety policies and rules and regulations
And don’t forget that our selection process includes a safety critical medical assessment, that covers general health, vision, hearing, colour vision and drugs and alcohol testing.
**Our Benefits**:
Because we value our people and reward hard work, we’ve created a benefits package that we think you’ll love. So, you’ll be able to make the most of:
- Opportunities to progress and grow - including comprehensive training schemes and a range of online learning courses.
- Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services. *Certain eligibility criteria will apply.
- 75% discount with other Train Operating Companies - after 2 years with us, you’ll also get discounted travel on many other rail services in the UK and Europe.
- Defined Benefit Pension Scheme - you’ll rarely find a pension as good as a Northern pension, and we top up your pension with a generous 1.5 times your contribution.
- A generous holiday entitlement - our holiday entitlements can help you feel like you can get away too.
